Starter faults
When fau lts arise it should be borne in mind that t he ir cau se n ee d no t n ecessarily lie
with
the starter itself, no r in the poor electrical connection of the vehicle earthing
points, but also in the fuel sup ply. The following remedial hints are limited to the
a
ctua l s ta rt er system.
A. When the ignition is switched on,
the
armature shaft does not rotate,
or only slowly:
l . Battery exhausted .
2.
Battery defective.
3. Battery terminals loose, oxidized,
ea rth connection poor .
4.
Starter brushes or terminal s hav e
ground contact.
5. Carbon brushes of the s ta rt er do not
lie on the commutator, are j ammed
in their guides, are worn, broken ,
oil-smeared or soiled.
6. Starter switch damaged { par ts l oo se,
so t hat s wit ch is not on, burnt out).
7. Magnet ic switch of starter damaged
(only with solenoid-cont r olled
sta rter).
8. Loss
of cur rent in leads too great,
le ads damaged , l ea d connecti ons
l
oose.
B. Armature rotates, but pinion does
not engage:
l . Pinion soiled.
2. Burr on pinion or gear rim.
C. When the ignition is switched on ,
the starter
armature rotates until
the pinion connects, then stops:
l. Battery insufficiently cha rg ed .
2. P
re ssure of carbon brushes
insufficient.
3. M
agn etic switch of starter (only
with
solenoid - controlled star ter) not
in o rde r.
4. Lo ss of cur re nt in leads too great.
D. Starter keeps running after switch
is released:
l . S tart er sw itch does not switch off or
m agne tic sw itch (on ly with soleno i d-
co n tro ll ed starter) sti ck s.
E. Pinion does not disengage after
engine starts:
l . Pini on or flywh eel loathing badly
soil ed or da mag ed; re turn spring
we ak or brok en.
