Overview

This document provides comprehensive installation, operation, and maintenance guidelines for Salamander Pumps' Right Pump range, including both positive and universal head models. It also covers warranty information and troubleshooting.

Function Description

Salamander Right Pumps are designed to boost hot and cold water pressure in domestic plumbing systems. They are available in both positive and universal head configurations, catering to different system requirements. Positive head pumps are suitable for systems where a natural flow of water (at least 1 litre per 30 seconds or 2 L/min) can be achieved through the pump before it activates. Universal head pumps are designed for systems where natural flow cannot be achieved, often due to negative head conditions or complex pipework. The pumps are designed to be connected to the hot and cold water supplies, ensuring adequate pressure to outlets such as showers, taps, and other appliances.

Usage Features

Installation

  • Location: The pump should be located at the base of the cylinder, or if not possible, within 5m of the hot water cylinder (ideally 22mm pipe, max 2m of 15mm pipe). For pumps located above the hot water cylinder, it must be a minimum of 600mm below the cold water cistern.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow for motor cooling, with 100mm clear space around the pump.
  • Frost Protection: Loft-mounted pumps must be protected from frost.
  • Water Supplies: Must be fed by exclusive hot and cold water supplies. Never fit directly to cold water mains or communal risers. Hot supply pipework to the pump should be a maximum of 5m in 22mm pipe.
  • Electrical Connection: Connect to the electrical supply using the mains cable with the attached plug. The plug must be connected to an accessible socket compliant with BS 7671.
  • Anti-vibration Couplers: Use the supplied anti-vibration couplers to minimize pump vibration. Do not overtighten or use mechanical tools.
  • General Plumbing: Installation must comply with relevant requirements and local by-laws. The pump MUST be mounted upright (shaft horizontal, not screwed down). Avoid jointing compounds, Boss White, hemp, or steel wool. Solder fluxes must not contact the pump or AV couplers.
  • Pressure Vessel (Universal Pumps): Ensure the pressure vessel is fitted to the brass connection on top of the pump with the 1/2" rubber washer and is hand tight.

Commissioning

  • Flushing: Flush inlet pipework and carefully fill the pump with water by discharging water from the outlet flexible coupler into a container.
  • Air Discharge: It is CRITICAL to discharge air from inlet pipework and pump chambers by allowing natural flow through the pump before connecting to outlet pipework.
  • System Fill: Connect discharge pipework, check all pump isolating valves are open, and fill the system. Check for leaks.
  • DO NOT RUN PUMP DRY: Running dry will cause irreparable damage and invalidate the warranty.
  • Flow Check (Positive Head Systems): Open shower mixer valve/system outlets to maximum hot and cold to check for a natural flow of at least 2 litres per minute, individually on hot or cold.
  • Flow Check (All Systems): Open hot water outlets fully for 5-6 seconds, then turn off. Repeat for cold water outlets. Repeat 2-3 times until flow is steady.

Water Storage

  • Cold Water Storage: Ensure adequate cold water storage capacity for household requirements (minimum 50 gallons/227 litres per bathroom, 80 gallons/385 litres for one bathroom and one en-suite shower room).
  • Tank Inlet/Outlet: Cold water supplies to the cylinder and pump should be taken from the opposite side of the cold water storage tank from the cold mains inlet. The bottom of the cold tank must be cleared of debris.
  • Water Starvation Protection (WSP): The WSP is a Salamander level switch positioned 102mm higher than the highest outlet from the cold water storage tank. It switches off the pump if the water level drops too low.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance

  • Regular Checks: Periodically check for leaks, unusual noises, or reduced performance.
  • Inlet Filters: Fit pump inlet filters and ensure they are clean and not blocked.
  • Couplers: Ensure all AV couplers are straight and not bent or distorted.
  • Rubber Feet: Ensure rubber feet are fitted to the pump to reduce noise from vibration.

Troubleshooting

The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Pump will not start: Check power supply, fuse, circuit breaker, inlet/outlet connections, gravity flow, float sticking in outlet, and flow switch malfunction.
  • Pump above hot water cylinder and becomes noisy/low pressure: Check for aeration or water starvation. Ensure pump is a minimum of 600mm below the cold water tank.
  • Reduced/intermittent flow: Check for incorrect or no anti-aeration flange fitted, insufficient gravity flow, blocked inlet filters, couplers restricting flow, air in system, wrong size pump for system, and hot temp set too high.
  • Pump starts with all outlets closed: Check for leaks and ensure all outlets are fully closed or capped.
  • Pump is noisy: Check for air in system and pump vibrating on surface.
  • Pump is leaking: Check for pump exposed to mains water pressure, chemical damage, excessive temperature, or if the pump appears to have leaked but is unsure.

Water Hammer Protection

Water hammer can be mitigated by fitting a pressure vessel unit into the supply pipework as close as possible to the outlet.

Pump Hunting Protection

This section addresses issues where the pump turns ON-OFF-ON at intervals. This can be caused by:

  • All outlets not fully closed.
  • A leak at a connection.
  • Boosted toilets not fitted with equilibrium ball valves.
  • Residual hot water contracts in long pipe runs.
  • Irritating effects of hunting are cushioned by the pressure vessel (an inbuilt feature of the Right pump universal range).

Stored Hot Water Volume

To calculate the volume of stored hot water required, consider:

  • Number of bathrooms, with particular attention to the size of the bath.
  • Number of persons in household.
  • Time spent in shower (e.g., 10mins in a 5 gal/minute shower will use up 50 gals/227 litres of the cold water storage capacity, approx 60% of which (30 gallons/136 litres) will be hot water from the cylinder).

HWS Blending Valve Controller

A Salamander approved HWS Blending valve controller will protect booster pumps in systems where the temperature of the stored hot water is uncontrolled or crudely controlled via a boiler thermostat.

Mechanical Seals

Scale deposits in water supplies can cause the mechanical seal to stick if left for long periods without use. It is recommended to run the Right pump positive range for at least five minutes every four weeks to 'exercise' all working parts.

Warranty and Registration
