Overview

The DAVID X amplifier is a state-of-the-art Swiss-designed combo amp specifically engineered for acoustic instruments. It offers a no-compromise amplification solution, ideal for musicians seeking high-quality sound for practice, home studio use, and live performances. Its compact size also makes it one of the most portable and flexible models in the SCHERTLER amplifier range.

Function Description:

The DAVID X is a bi-amplified analog power amplifier delivering 120 W (112 dB SPL) of power. It features a sophisticated Class-A preamp with no integrated circuits and No Negative Feedback (NNFB) technology, which contributes to unparalleled dynamics and fast transient behavior. The amplifier is equipped with a 1" dome tweeter and a 6" woofer, integrated into an optimized 2-way bass reflex system.

The amplifier provides three input channels, allowing for versatile connectivity. Channel 1 is designed for instruments, while Channel 2 can accommodate either an instrument or a vocal microphone. A dedicated stereo input is also available for connecting playback devices such as PCs or MP3 players.

Usage Features:

Channel 1 (Instrument Input):

  • INSTRUMENT IN (1.1): An unbalanced 1/4" jack input optimized for high-level signals. The electronics automatically adapt to the input, requiring no special adjustments.
  • 10V (1.2): Supplies 10 VDC to the jack connector, suitable for powering electret microphones.
  • GAIN (1.3): A variable gain preamplifier to adjust the input sensitivity. Proper gain setting is crucial for achieving the cleanest possible sound.
  • OVERLOAD (1.4): An LED indicator that lights up when the input signal level is too high, potentially causing distortion. To set the gain, turn it up until the OVERLOAD LED blinks, then slightly reduce it.
  • WARM (1.5): A low-pass filter that dampens higher frequencies, producing a warmer sound. This is particularly useful when using bridge-mounted pickups like the SCHERTLER STAT Series for instruments such as violins, cellos, and double basses.
  • HIGH, MID, LOW (EQ) (1.6): Three rotary controls for frequency regulation, offering ±15 dB cut or boost for high, mid, and low frequencies. Centrally positioned controls provide no cut or boost.
  • REVERB (1.7): Adjusts the level of the digital reverb effect for this specific channel.
  • VOLUME (1.8): Regulates the individual channel volume.

Channel 2 (Mic/Instrument Input):

  • MIC INPUT (XLR) (2.1): An electronically balanced XLR input for various microphone types, including dynamic and condenser mics.
  • INSTRUMENT IN (2.2): An unbalanced 1/4" jack input for high-level instrument signals, with automatic electronic adaptation.
  • P24 (2.3): Provides 24 VDC phantom power to the XLR connector for condenser microphones and some preamps. Users should verify compatibility to avoid potential damage.
  • 10V (2.4): Supplies 10 VDC to the jack connector for powering electret microphones.
  • GAIN (2.5): Similar to Channel 1, this variable gain preamplifier adjusts the input sensitivity for optimal signal processing.
  • OVERLOAD (2.6): An LED indicator for high input signal levels, signaling potential distortion.
  • RESON (2.7): A resonance (notch) filter that cuts frequencies at 150 Hz or 240 Hz to reduce low-frequency feedback. Turning it left provides no attenuation (flat), while turning it right provides maximum attenuation.
  • RESON button (2.8): Selects the resonant frequency (240 Hz/150 Hz) for the notch filter.
  • HIGH, MID, LOW (EQ) (2.9): Similar to Channel 1, these controls regulate high, mid, and low frequencies with ±15 dB cut or boost.
  • REVERB (2.10): Adjusts the digital reverb level for this channel.
  • VOLUME (2.11): Regulates the individual channel volume.

Master Section Controls:

  • STEREO IN (3.1): A 1/8" mini jack stereo input for external playback devices. Its volume is controlled by the MASTER volume.
  • DI OUT (4.1): A general XLR balanced output for connecting to external systems. Its volume is independent of the MASTER control but affected by individual channel volumes.
  • DI OUT VOL (4.2): Sets the output level for the DI OUT.
  • LOW CUT (4.3): When active, this filter cuts all frequencies below 120 Hz. This is useful for instruments generating aggressive low frequencies, connecting a subwoofer, or preventing unwanted vibration and potential damage to the DAVID X.
  • MASTER (4.4): Controls the overall system volume.
  • POWER LED (4.5): Indicates when the amplifier is switched ON.
  • LINE OUT (4.6): An unbalanced jack socket for connecting to external systems. Its output volume depends on the MASTER control.
  • MUTE (4.7): Cuts the audio on the Master output.
  • INSERT (4.8): A stereo jack socket for connecting external devices (e.g., compressor, equalizer) in series to all outputs.
  • REVERB Master (4.9): Regulates the general level of the digital reverb, which is common to all channels. Individual channel reverb levels can be adjusted via their dedicated controls.

Rear Panel Controls:

  • POWER ON/OFF (5.1): The main system ON/OFF switch.
  • GROUND LIFT (5.2): Connects and disconnects the ground, useful for eliminating ground hum.
  • MAINS POWER CONNECTION (5.3): The power input. It is crucial to ensure the correct voltage is observed and to use the original connection cable.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The amplifier can be cleaned with a dry cloth. Avoid using water or solvents like acetone or alcohol, as these can damage the finish and labeling.
  • Visual Inspection: Regularly check the amplifier for signs of wear, tear, or damage.
  • Servicing and Repair: The DAVID X contains no "user serviceable" parts. All servicing and repairs must be carried out by qualified personnel. In case of malfunction or damage (e.g., liquid spills, objects falling inside, exposure to rain/moisture, drops), contact the nearest SCHERTLER technical assistance center.
  • Safety: Always ensure the mains cable is not walked on, tripped over, or pinched. Avoid using the amplifier near power transformers, TV sets, RF transmitters, or other sources of electrical energy to prevent interference. Use only manufacturer-specified attachments and accessories. Avoid loud volume levels, acoustic feedback, high distortion, and impulse noises to prevent damage to the device and hearing.

The DAVID X is designed for robust and reliable operation, but adherence to safety guidelines and proper maintenance practices will ensure its longevity and optimal performance.
