Overview

The document describes the Sealey RJA2500 Trolley Jack 2.5 Tonne Aluminium Rocket Lift, a hydraulic jack designed primarily for motor racing enthusiasts due to its lightweight construction and fast lifting capabilities.

Function Description:

The RJA2500 is a hydraulic trolley jack used for lifting vehicles. It features a "Rocket Lift" mechanism, achieved through the use of twin pistons, which enables rapid lifting. Lifting bars are fitted on either side of the anodized aluminum chassis, contributing to its fast and lightweight pick-up. The jack is designed for lifting only and should not be used for supporting a lifted load; suitable axle stands must be used for support.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model No.: RJA2500
  • Capacity: 2.5 tonne
  • Minimum Saddle Height: 95mm
  • Maximum Saddle Height: 485mm
  • Maximum Chassis Height: 160mm
  • Length: 665mm
  • Weight: 25kg

Usage Features:

  • Assembly:
    • The jack comes with a two-part pumping handle.
    • To assemble, remove the retaining clip from the handle socket base, insert the upper handle into the lower handle (which locks together), loosen the handle retaining screw, insert the pump handle into the handle socket, ensuring it engages the universal joint of the release valve, and then tighten the retaining screw.
  • Purging Hydraulic System:
    • Before first use or if the jack feels "spongy," the hydraulic system needs purging.
    • This involves opening the release valve by turning the handle one full turn counter-clockwise, pumping the handle a minimum of twenty full strokes, and then closing the release valve by turning the handle clockwise.
  • Raising a Vehicle:
    • Ensure the jack and vehicle are on a hard, level surface (preferably concrete, avoiding tarmacadam).
    • Engage the vehicle handbrake, switch off the engine, and put the transmission in gear (or "PARK").
    • Consult the vehicle manual to determine the correct jacking points.
    • Position the jack under a suitable jacking point.
    • Turn the release valve clockwise to the closed position (do not over-tighten).
    • Pump the handle up and down to raise the vehicle to the desired height.
    • Place appropriately rated axle stands beneath the vehicle at the manufacturer's recommended locations.
    • Slowly turn the release valve counter-clockwise to lower the vehicle onto the axle stands.
  • Lowering a Vehicle:
    • Turn the release valve clockwise to the closed position.
    • Pump the handle to raise the vehicle off the axle stands.
    • Remove the axle stands.
    • Slowly turn the release valve counter-clockwise to lower the vehicle to the ground in a controlled manner.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always ensure the jack is in sound condition; repair or replace damaged parts immediately with genuine parts.
    • Use the jack in a suitable, well-lit, clean, and tidy working area.
    • Chock vehicle wheels.
    • Maintain a minimum distance of 0.5m between the vehicle and static objects.
    • Keep non-essential persons at a safe distance.
    • Ensure no passengers are in the vehicle.
    • Place the jack under only manufacturer-recommended lifting points.
    • Check lifting point stability and centering on the jack saddle.
    • Ensure jack wheels are free to move.
    • DANGER: Use the jack for lifting only, NOT for supporting the lifted load.
    • Always use suitable axle stands before working under the vehicle.
    • Ensure no persons or obstructions are beneath the vehicle before lowering.
    • Do not operate the jack if damaged, by untrained persons, when tired, or under the influence of drugs/alcohol.
    • Do not exceed the rated capacity.
    • Do not allow the vehicle to move during lifting/lowering.
    • Do not jack if there's a risk of spillage of fuel, battery acid, or other dangerous substances.
    • Do not use the jack for purposes other than intended.
    • Do not top up the hydraulic system with brake fluid; use only hydraulic jack oil (Sealey Part No: HJO500MLS or HJO5LS).
    • Do not adjust the safety overload valve.
    • When not in use, store the jack fully lowered in a safe, dry, childproof location.
    • Always leave the saddle and ram fully retracted when not in use to protect critical areas from corrosion.

Maintenance Features:

  • Important: Only fully qualified personnel should attempt maintenance or repair.
  • Monthly Maintenance:
    • Lubricate the ram, linkages, saddle, and pump mechanism with light oil.
    • Grease the wheel bearings and axles.
    • Lubricate the castors with light oil.
    • Keep all jack surfaces and warning labels clean.
    • Check and maintain the ram oil level (see "Checking Oil Level").
  • Three Monthly Maintenance:
    • Check the ram for any signs of rust or corrosion. Clean and wipe with an oil cloth as required.
  • Checking Oil Level:
    • Fully retract the ram by turning the release valve counter-clockwise.
    • With the jack in a level position, remove the oil filler plug.
    • The oil should be level with the bottom of the oil filler hole.
    • If not, top up with clean hydraulic jack oil (Sealey Part No: HJO500MLS or HJO5LS).
    • Replace the oil filler plug and check jack operation.
    • Purge air from the hydraulic unit as required (refer to Section 3.2).
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Jack will not lift to full height: Check/top up oil level.
    • Jack will not hold the load: Contact authorized service agent (possible causes: release valve not closing, contaminated hydraulic jack oil, pump valves not sealing).
    • Lift arm will not lower: Contact authorized service agent (possible causes: cylinder ram binding, worn parts, internal component damage, broken/unhooked return spring, lift arm linkage bent/binding).
    • Jack feels spongy when lifting: Refer to air purge procedure (Section 3.2).
  • De-commissioning:
    • If the jack becomes unserviceable and requires disposal, draw off the oil into an approved container and dispose of both the jack and oil according to local regulations.
  • Parts Support: Parts listings and diagrams are available on www.sealey.co.uk, via email sales@sealey.co.uk, or by phone 01284 757500.
  • Warranty: 12 months from the purchase date, with proof of purchase required for any claim.
