Overview

The Sealey VS1824 Motorcycle Coil Spring Compressor is an essential tool designed for the assembly and disassembly of suspension units, specifically tailored for most types of classic and modern motorcycle coil springs. This device is supplied with four spare plastic spring protectors and comes in a metal storage case, ensuring its protection and organization.

Function Description:

The primary function of the VS1824 is to safely compress motorcycle coil springs, allowing for the removal or installation of shock absorbers and other suspension components. It operates by engaging its jaws onto the coil spring and then compressing it using two 17mm hex adjuster bolts. The compression process needs to be carefully managed, alternating between each arm to ensure even compression and prevent unbalancing the spring. Once the spring is sufficiently compressed, it allows for the removal of the top plate from the strut and subsequent withdrawal of the spring. For reassembly, the process is reversed.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Drive: The compressor can be operated using a 3/8" square drive or a 17mm hex wrench. This dual drive option provides flexibility for users with different tool sets.
  • Maximum Jaw Opening: The device offers a maximum jaw opening of 105mm, accommodating a wide range of motorcycle coil spring sizes.
  • Construction: The compressor is robustly constructed to withstand the forces involved in spring compression. It includes two main arms with jaws that engage the spring, and two threaded rods with hex adjuster bolts for compression.

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Use: The manual provides clear, step-by-step instructions for both removing and replacing springs, making it accessible for users.
  • Safety Features:
    • Eye Protection: Users are explicitly warned to wear approved safety eye protection (standard spectacles are not adequate) to prevent injury from potential spring release or debris.
    • Even Compression: The design and instructions emphasize the importance of alternating between the two adjuster bolts to ensure even compression, preventing the spring from becoming unbalanced or damaged.
    • Coil Bound Prevention: A critical warning advises users not to compress the spring to the extent where the coil windings touch, or where the jaws touch, as this can lead to dangerous situations or damage.
    • Unattended Operation: Users are strictly warned not to leave a compressed spring unattended.
    • Tool Compatibility: The manual explicitly states "DO NOT USE AIR TOOLS" for compression, indicating that manual ratchet wrenches are the intended and safer method.
    • Work Area Safety: Instructions include maintaining a clean, uncluttered, and well-lit work area, ensuring correct balance and footing, and removing loose clothing or jewelry.
    • Personnel Safety: Keep children and unauthorized persons away from the working area.
  • Versatility: Suitable for most types of classic and modern motorcycle coil springs, making it a versatile tool for various motorcycle maintenance tasks.
  • Storage: Supplied with a metal storage case, which helps protect the tool and its accessories (plastic spring protectors) when not in use.
  • Plastic Spring Protectors: The inclusion of four spare plastic spring protectors helps prevent damage to the spring's coating during compression, preserving the integrity and appearance of the motorcycle's suspension components.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, it is crucial to check the spring compressor for any damage or wear. If any issues are suspected, the unit should not be used, and the user should contact a Sealey Dealer for advice on repair kits and spare parts. This proactive approach ensures the safety and longevity of the tool.
  • Lubrication: The force screws of the spring compressor must be kept well lubricated. This is a critical maintenance step to ensure smooth operation, reduce wear, and prevent seizing, thereby extending the lifespan of the tool. The manual highlights "ALWAYS KEEP FORCE SCREWS WELL LUBRICATED."
  • Cleaning: The spring compressor should be kept clean. Regular cleaning prevents the buildup of dirt and debris that could impede its function or cause premature wear.
  • Storage: When not in use, the spring compressor should be stored in a safe, dry, and childproof location. This protects the tool from environmental damage (like rust) and prevents unauthorized access, especially by children. The metal storage case provided is ideal for this purpose.
  • Genuine Parts: In case of damage or wear, users are instructed to replace or repair parts using only genuine Sealey parts. Using unauthorized parts can be dangerous and will invalidate the warranty, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the tool's original specifications for safety and performance.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a 12-month warranty from the purchase date, requiring proof of purchase for any claim. This provides assurance regarding the quality and reliability of the tool.

The Sealey VS1824 is designed with both functionality and safety in mind, providing a reliable solution for motorcycle suspension work when used and maintained according to the provided instructions.
