Overview

This document describes the Sealey ASV100, ASV125, ASV150, ASV200, ASV250, and ASV300 series of vices, which are bench-mounting steel vices designed for workshop, garage, and machine-shop use. These vices are manufactured to a high standard and are intended to provide years of trouble-free performance when used according to the provided instructions and properly maintained.

Function Description:

The Sealey vices are designed to securely hold workpieces during various tasks such as sawing, cutting, drilling, and other operations where a stable clamping mechanism is required. They feature a fixed base that mounts directly onto a workbench, ensuring stability. An optional swivel vice plate adaptor is available for models ASV100, ASV125, ASV150, and ASV200, allowing the vice to be rotated for optimal positioning of the workpiece. All models in this range include an anvil, which provides a flat, hardened surface for light hammering or shaping tasks. The primary function is to provide a strong, adjustable clamping force to hold objects firmly in place, thereby enhancing safety and precision during work. The vice operates by turning a handle that drives a screw mechanism, moving one jaw towards the other to grip the workpiece.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Sealey vice series comes in various models, each with specific jaw sizes and jaw openings, indicating their clamping capacity.

  • ASV100: Jaw Size 100mm, Jaw Opening 100mm. Optional Swivel Adaptor Plate: VSB4.
  • ASV125: Jaw Size 125mm, Jaw Opening 125mm. Optional Swivel Adaptor Plate: VSB5.
  • ASV150: Jaw Size 150mm, Jaw Opening 150mm. Optional Swivel Adaptor Plate: VSB6.
  • ASV200: Jaw Size 200mm, Jaw Opening 200mm. Optional Swivel Adaptor Plate: VSB8.
  • ASV250: Jaw Size 250mm, Jaw Opening 250mm. No optional swivel adaptor plate available (N/A).
  • ASV300: Jaw Size 300mm, Jaw Opening 300mm. No optional swivel adaptor plate available (N/A).

The construction material is steel, ensuring durability and strength for demanding applications. The fixed bases are designed for direct mounting, and the optional swivel adaptors enhance versatility.

Usage Features:

The vices are designed for ease of use and safety, with several key features:

  • Bench Mounting: The vices are intended to be securely fastened to a work surface. This is a critical safety requirement, as an improperly secured vice can lead to instability, damage, and personal injury.
  • Anvil: All models include an anvil, providing an additional functional surface for light metalworking tasks.
  • Optional Swivel Adaptor Plate: For models ASV100 through ASV200, an optional swivel adaptor plate allows the vice to be rotated. This feature enhances flexibility, enabling users to position the workpiece at various angles without repositioning the entire vice. The rotation is achieved by loosening locking nuts, rotating the vice to the desired position, and then re-tightening the nuts to secure it.
  • Assembly: For models without the swivel adaptor, the vice comes fully assembled and only needs to be secured to the work surface. For models with the optional swivel adaptor, assembly involves screwing two bolts into the base plate, locating the base plate inside the swivel base, passing the bolts through the locating holes in the back jaw, securing with a washer and locking nut, and then securing the entire assembly to the work surface. It is crucial to ensure the locking nuts are fully tightened before use.
  • Safety Guidelines: The manual emphasizes several safety precautions:
    • Heavy Item: Users are warned that the vice is a heavy item and care must be taken when lifting or moving it.
    • Secure Fastening: Always ensure the vice is properly fastened to the work surface.
    • No Hammering (except anvil): Do not hammer any part of the vice except the anvil.
    • No Missing Parts: Do not operate the vice if any parts are missing.
    • Intended Use: Use the vice only for its intended purpose.
    • Operator Condition: Do not operate the vice when tired, under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or intoxicating medication.
    • Children: Do not allow children to operate the vice.
    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): When sawing, cutting, or drilling, always use appropriate industrial gloves and eye protection.
    • Finger Trapping: Take care not to get fingers trapped between the jaws.
    • Damaged Parts: Replace or repair damaged parts using only authorized service agents and recommended parts.
    • Clothing and Jewelry: Remove ill-fitting clothing, ties, watches, rings, and other loose jewelry, and contain long hair.
    • Work Area: Use in a suitable, clean, tidy, and well-lit work area, free from unrelated materials.
    • Balance and Footing: Maintain correct balance and footing, ensure the floor is not slippery, and wear non-slip shoes.
    • Unauthorized Persons: Keep children and unauthorized persons away from the working area.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance is essential for the longevity and safe operation of the Sealey vices:

  • Jaw Position when not in use: When the vice is not in use, the front jaw should be screwed in so that it is just touching the back jaw. This helps protect the screw mechanism and jaws.
  • Cleaning and Lubrication: Keep the vice clean and lubricate all moving parts with oil or grease on a regular basis. This prevents rust, reduces friction, and ensures smooth operation.
  • Pre-use Inspection: Before each use, check that the vice is securely mounted on the work surface and inspect it for any visible damage. If any suspect item is found, the vice must be removed from service, and the necessary action taken to remedy the problem before further use. This proactive inspection helps prevent accidents and further damage.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a 12-month warranty from the purchase date, requiring proof of purchase for any claim.
  • Environmental Protection: Users are advised to recycle unwanted materials, tools, accessories, and packaging. When the product becomes unserviceable, any fluids (if applicable) should be drained into approved containers and disposed of according to local regulations, and the product itself should be disposed of in an environmentally compatible manner at a recycling center.

The manual emphasizes that failure to follow these instructions may cause damage, personal injury, and invalidate the warranty. Sealey Group reserves the right to continually improve products and alter data, specifications, and component parts without prior notice. No liability is accepted for incorrect use of the product.
