Basic Feeder Protection Using SEL-849

INTRODUCTION
The SEL-849 Motor Management Relay offers advanced low-voltage motor protection in a
compact and economical design, but it can also be used to provide basic feeder protection for a
variety of applications.
This application guide demonstrates how to configure the SEL-849 to provide overcurrent
protection for a feeder protection application.
FACTORY DEFAULT LOGIC CONNECTION
Figure 1 shows the connection diagram for factory default I/O assignments for feeder protection
using the SEL-849.

CONFIGURE THE SEL-849 FOR BASIC FEEDER PROTECTION
The example settings used in this section are for a 1,200 A feeder supplying a 480 V switchboard.
Perform the following steps to configure the SEL-849.
Step 1
Connect the computer to PORT2A or PORT2B of the relay using an Ethernet cable. Check the
LED for connectivity status.

Configure SEL-849 for Basic Feeder Protection

Connect Computer to Relay

Connect computer to PORT2A or PORT2B of the relay using an Ethernet cable.

Access SEL-849 Web Server

Open an Internet browser and type the SEL-849 default IP address (169.254.0.1).

Login to SEL-849 Web Server

Select Access Level, enter default passwords (OTTER/TAIL) and click Login.

Configure Basic Settings

Set rated frequency, phase rotation, and application type (FEEDER).

Configure CT Ratios and Full Load Amps

Set Phase CT Ratio (CTR1) and Full Load Amps (FLA1) based on feeder and CT specifications.

Enable Factory Logic

Ensure Factory Logic (FACTLOG) is set to Y in Configuration Settings.

Configure Instantaneous Overcurrent Settings

Set instantaneous overcurrent pickup and delay for phase and residual faults.

Configure Time-Overcurrent Settings

Set time-overcurrent pickup, curve, and time dial for phase and residual faults.

Submit Configuration Changes

Verify settings and submit changes to apply the basic feeder protection configuration.
