Overview

The Shark Steam Pocket Mop, S3501 Series, is an owner-operated steam cleaning device designed for household use, specifically for cleaning hard-floor surfaces. Its primary function is to sanitize and clean floors using steam, offering a chemical-free cleaning solution.

Function Description:

The Steam Pocket Mop generates hot steam to effectively clean and sanitize sealed hard-floor surfaces. It operates by heating water in an internal tank, which then produces steam that is released through the mop head. The user controls the amount of steam released by pumping the handle in a downward motion. This allows for customized cleaning based on the floor type and the level of cleaning required. The mop is designed to be used with specialized "Pocket Pads" that attach to the mop head, trapping dirt and grime as the steam loosens it. The device is particularly effective for sanitizing, with studies showing its ability to sanitize areas when used with the rectangle mop head for a specified duration and motion.

Usage Features:

The Shark Steam Pocket Mop is designed for ease of assembly and operation.

  • Assembly: The mop handle inserts into the mop body until it clicks into place. Cleaning pads, referred to as Pocket Pads or Dirt Grip™ pads, are fitted onto the mop head by first attaching one side and then pulling the lavender loop over the head, securing it with quick fasteners. The mop head then snaps into the bottom of the mop body.
  • Water Filling: The water tank is accessed by turning the cap counterclockwise. A provided filling flask is used to add water, ensuring not to exceed the maximum fill line. Distilled water is recommended, especially in hard-water areas, to prevent mineral buildup and damage to the unit.
  • Adjustable Length: The mop features a telescopic latch on the handle, allowing users to adjust the length of the mop to a comfortable height. This enhances user ergonomics during cleaning.
  • Steam Activation: Once plugged into an electrical outlet, a power light illuminates, indicating that the mop is heating up. It takes approximately 30 seconds for the mop to be ready to produce steam. Steam is activated by pumping the handle a few times in a downward motion. This pumping action allows users to control the steam output, enabling a customized cleaning experience.
  • Cleaning Motion: The mop is used with a forward and backward motion. When one side of the cleaning pad becomes dirty, the mop head can be flipped over to use the other side of the pad.
  • Sanitizing: For sanitizing, the mop should be plugged in and allowed to heat up for 30 seconds. After activating steam by pumping the handle, users should mop with a forward and backward motion for at least 3 minutes to sanitize the area.
  • Water Tank Empty Indicator: The mop will stop producing steam when the water tank is empty. The tank can be refilled at any time, provided the mop is unplugged from the outlet.
  • Safety Features: The device includes a polarized plug as a safety feature. Users are advised not to force the plug into an outlet if it doesn't fit and to contact a qualified electrician. It is also not recommended to use an extension cord with this product. The manual emphasizes caution due to the hot steam and warns against directing steam toward people, pets, or plants. It also advises against leaving the mop unattended when plugged in and to always unplug it before servicing or when not in use.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the Shark Steam Pocket Mop.

  • Pocket Pad Care: The Pocket Pads are machine washable. They should be washed separately with warm water and liquid detergent. Before washing, the hook-and-loop fasteners on the pads should be closed to prevent snagging. It is crucial to avoid using bleach, powdered detergents, or fabric softeners, as these can damage the microfiber fabric, reduce cleaning performance, and impair absorbency. The pads should be line-dried or tumble-dried on a low setting to extend their lifespan. If loose fibers appear, they should be trimmed with scissors rather than pulled to prevent the weave from unraveling.
  • Cool-Down Period: After use, the Steam Mop should be unplugged and allowed to cool for 2-3 minutes before removing the Pocket Pad from the mop head. This prevents scalding injuries from the hot pad.
  • Water Tank Emptying: Before storing, the water tank should be emptied.
  • Exterior Cleaning: The exterior of the Steam Mop can be cleaned with a dry or damp cloth after unplugging the power cord and allowing the unit to cool. Users are warned not to pour water or use alcohol, benzene, or paint thinner on the Steam Mop.
  • Storage: To store the steam mop, all steam should be released, and the unit allowed to cool completely. It can be hung from a large hook (not included) or leaned against a wall for upright storage. It is important to always store the Steam Pocket Mop with the Pocket Pad removed, away from children or high-traffic areas.
  • Troubleshooting: The owner's guide provides solutions for common issues such as the mop not turning on (check plug, fuse, breaker), not making steam (prime pump, check water tank), leaving water on the floor (check if pad is too wet, ensure pad is attached correctly), or being hard to push (ensure pad is attached correctly, increase pole height for leverage, ensure pad is wet enough, change dirty pad).

The Shark Steam Pocket Mop is designed to be a reliable and effective tool for maintaining clean and sanitized hard-floor surfaces in a household environment, provided the user adheres to the outlined usage and maintenance guidelines.
