The products described here were developed to perform safety–oriented func-
tions as part of an overall installation or machine. A complete safety–oriented
system generally features sensors, evaluation units, signaling units, and reliable
shutdown concepts. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to ensure that a
system or machine is functioning properly as a whole. Siemens AG, its regional
offices, and associated companies (hereinafter referred to as "Siemens") cannot
guarantee all the properties of an entire plant, system or machine that has not
been designed by Siemens.
Nor can Siemens assume liability for recommendations that appear or are implied
in the following description. No new guarantee, warranty, or liability claims be-
yond the scope of the Siemens general terms of supply are to be derived or in-
ferred from the following description.
The PAC RS485 expansion module is designed for use with SENTRON PAC
Power Monitoring Devices. The PAC RS485 expansion module integrates the
SENTRON PAC Power Monitoring Device into power management systems and
automation systems.
The PAC RS485 expansion module
• supplies the values measured by the Power Monitoring Device to the master,
e.g. the Modbus Master.
• receives information, e.g. commands, from the master and sends them to the
Power Monitoring Device.
See Figure 2. To connect cables with end ferrules to the screw terminals, you
also require a compression tool in accordance with EN 60947–1.
Mount the RS485 expansion module before operating the SENTRON PAC. Note
the following:
• ESD guidelines
• The guidelines of the Modbus Organization for mounting and grounding, etc.

a) Only attach the RS485 expansion module to the plastic enclosure.
b) Ensure safe isolation from supply.
c) Discharge yourself.
d) Mount the Power Monitoring Device.
e) Connect the current terminals and voltage terminals to the SENTRON PAC.
Mounting steps see Figure 3
1. Connect the PAC RS485 expansion module to the SENTRON PAC. with the
aid of the guide and the anti-twist element.
2. Tighten the screws connecting the RS485 expansion module to the
SENTRON PAC with a torque of 0.5 Nm.
3. Connect the PAC RS485 expansion module to the RS 485 network (see
Figs. 2, 5, 6 and 7 and the block diagram in Fig. 4 ).
4. If necessary, switch on the integral bus terminating resistor (TER) or the re-
sistor for line polarization (PU + PD) (see Figs. 5 and 6).
5. Ensure sufficient strain relief for all connected wiring.
The RS485 expansion module is configured on the display of the SENTRON PAC
Power Monitoring Device..
For configuration details, please refer to the following manuals:
• "RS485 expansion module"
• "SENTRON PACxxxx"
Both these manuals can be found on the SENTRON PAC CD and on the Internet
(see Online Support).
Read and understand these instructions before installing,
operating, or maintaining the equipment.
