7 Modification and decommissioning
The following modifications can be dangerous and void the conformity as well as applicable regulations and standards:
• Modification of the I/O system
• Modification of the arrangement of control cabinets
• Modification of the interconnection and selection of electrical components
• Mechanical alteration of the control cabinet

Only engineers or designers who are familiar with the relevant technologies, regulations and standards are permitted to plan
modifications.
Decommissioning of the I/O system or portions thereof represents a modification.
At least the following points must be taken into consideration when planning modifications:
• Parts of the system may have to be isolated to allow work to be performed safely.
• Parts of the system may have to be shut down for the modification so that operation can be resumed safely.
• Follow the correct order for the modification so that the modification can be carried out safely with regard to electrical
safety, the automation and the system control.
• Pay attention to whether safety functions might be affected by the modification.
• Pay attention to whether explosion-protected systems or hazardous areas are affected.
Hazardous areas are especially critical parts of modifications. The planner must apply utmost care.
It may be necessary to fall back on earlier design and development phases of the system (Safety Life Cycle) to safely deal with
the functional aspects of the modification.
Explosion-protected systems are of critical importance for plant safety:
• An unauthorized modification immediately discharges the operational approval of the system.
• Only qualified personnel are permitted to make modifications taking into account all system requirements.
