The problem is that Windows 98SE does not fully support hot unplugging. A system
failure (blue screen) may occur if you remove the FireWire drive while the computer
is running. To fix this problem (and improve performance), you must install the latest
FireWire (1394) software drivers. Locate, download, and install the latest FireWire
(1394) software drivers from the Microsoft website:
