The SMSL M500 is a high-resolution USB DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) and headphone amplifier designed for audiophiles seeking premium sound quality. It supports MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) decoding, allowing users to experience the sound of original master recordings. The device is built with high-quality components and features to ensure optimal audio performance and user convenience.
Function Description
The M500 primarily functions as a DAC and a headphone amplifier. As a DAC, it converts digital audio signals from various sources into analog signals, which can then be output to a power amplifier, active speakers, or headphones. Its MQA decoding capability means it can fully unfold MQA audio files and streams, delivering the highest possible sound quality as intended by the artists and producers. The device supports a wide range of sampling rates and bit depths, including PCM up to 768kHz and DSD up to DSD512, ensuring compatibility with virtually all high-resolution audio formats.
The integrated headphone amplifier is designed with discrete components and high current output, providing a higher damping factor for better control over headphones. It features an independent volume control for headphones, which does not interfere with the preamp volume, allowing for flexible listening setups. The M500 offers multiple input options, including USB, two optical inputs, and a coaxial input, all of which support DSD streaming (DoP64). For outputs, it provides balanced XLR, unbalanced RCA, and a 6.35mm headphone jack, catering to various audio systems and preferences.
Usage Features
The M500 is designed for ease of use with a clear display and a comprehensive remote control.
- Display Interface: The device features a 2.19-inch LG TFT LCD display, which offers higher light transmission and a longer service life. The main user interface shows crucial information such as the output indicator (Line out or Headphones out), volume level, input source, stream indicator, audio format indicator (Hi-Res Audio, MQA, or DSD), and the current sample rate. It also displays "NO SIGNAL" when unlocked or not connected, and "MUTING" when muted.
- Knob Control: A multi-functional knob on the front panel allows users to adjust volume, navigate menus (up/down), and select options (press to Menu/Enter). Holding the knob can also return to the previous menu or power the unit on/off.
- Remote Control: A full-function remote control is included, providing convenient operation from a distance. The remote allows users to power on/off, mute, adjust volume, navigate menus, select input sources, and choose output options. It requires two AAA batteries. When using the remote, it should be pointed towards the signal receiver on the main unit, and obstructions should be avoided for optimal performance.
- MQA Playback: The M500 supports MQA decoding via its USB interface without requiring additional software. For optimal MQA playback, it is recommended to set the computer's volume to maximum when using software like foobar2000 or Audirvana with ASIO or WASAPI audio output. The MQA logo on the display changes color to indicate the status of the MQA file: green or blue for decoding and playing an MQA stream/file (blue for MQA Studio files), and magenta for rendering an MQA stream/file (final unfold). The display also shows the original master recording's sampling rate when playing MQA files.
- Setup Menu: The device offers a setup menu accessible via the knob or remote. This menu allows users to select input sources (USB, OPTI 1, OPTI 2, COAX), output modes (LINE OUT or HP OUT – noting that line out supports both RCA and XLR), and various digital filters (Fast Linear, Slow Linear, Fast Minimum, Slow Minimum, Apodizing, Fast Hybrid, Brickwall). These filters are specifically for non-MQA PCM formats and allow users to fine-tune the sound to their preference. The menu also includes a dimmer setting (LEVEL 1 to LEVEL 9) for the display brightness and a system information page showing model name and version.
- Power Supply: The M500 incorporates a high-performance power supply chip (ES9311) with ultra-low noise, designed to push the ES9038PRO DAC chip to its limits. It also features built-in shielded, low-noise power supply processing, which improves power efficiency and reduces power consumption.
- Clock Processing: Ultra-low phase noise and an optimized clock processing circuit are used to achieve ultra-low clock jitter, contributing to a cleaner and more accurate sound.
- Component Quality: The device utilizes high-quality gold-plated input and output jacks, three high-end dual op-amps (OPA1612), and numerous audio-grade components, all contributing to its superior audio performance.
Maintenance Features
The M500 is designed for reliable operation, but some general maintenance guidelines are provided to ensure its longevity and performance.
- Installation: It should be installed in a well-ventilated, cool, dry, and clean place, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, vibration, dust, moisture, or cold.
- Power Management: Only use the specified voltage for the unit. For long periods of non-use (e.g., during vacations), it is recommended to disconnect the power cable from the AC wall outlet.
- No User Servicing: Users should not attempt to modify or fix the unit themselves. Any service needs should be directed to the salesperson or customer service, and the cabinet should never be opened.
- Factory Reset: In case of operational issues, a factory reset can be performed by connecting the power cord while pressing the power button until the screen shows the logo, then releasing the button and restarting the unit.
- Warranty: The product comes with a warranty that covers defects under normal use. Within 7 days of purchase, customers can return or repair the product (provided it does not affect secondary sales). Free repair is offered for one year under normal use. The warranty is voided by human factors damage, non-normal working environment use, failure to follow manual instructions, private disassembly/modification, use of non-designated accessories, damaged QC/warranty stickers, lack of valid purchase proof, or if the product is not a Sabaj product.
- Firmware and Driver Updates: Firmware and drivers can be downloaded from the SMSL Audio website (http://www.smsl-audio.com/cn/download.asp) to ensure the device is running with the latest software and optimal performance.
