Overview

This document describes the Snap-on EEWH331A Air/Electric Tire Changer, a robust and versatile machine designed for efficient and safe tire servicing.

Function Description:

The Snap-on EEWH331A is an air/electric tilt-back tower tire changer specifically engineered for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and motorcycles. It is designed to handle one-piece rims, with dimensions based on OEM tires and wheels. The primary function of this machine is to facilitate the mounting and demounting of tires with ease of operation, safe handling of rims, reliability, and speed. Its design allows for working with aluminum or magnesium alloy wheels without causing damage to the customer's rims. The tire changer also incorporates features for bead seating and inflation, utilizing compressed air for efficient operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Acoustic Pressure: <70 dBA
  • Acoustic Pressure (Bead Seater): 120 dBA

Usage Features:

The tire changer features a comprehensive set of controls and tools for various operations:

  • Vertical Slide and Mounting Arm: Allows for horizontal displacement and precise positioning of the mount/demount tool.
  • Lever with Push-Button Handle: Used for tilting the column backward and forward, and for positioning the mount/demount tool.
  • Turntable with Multi-Position Jaws: The clamps can be retracted or expanded by a foot pedal, allowing for clamping wheels from both inside and outside. The turntable rotates clockwise and counter-clockwise, controlled by a foot pedal.
  • Bead Breaker Arm and Blade: Operated by a foot pedal, the bead breaker arm moves towards the machine to break tire beads. It can be set in a "Wide" position for wider tires.
  • Bead Seater/Inflator Pedal and Inflation Gauge: Used for seating tire beads and inflating tires, with an integrated gauge for monitoring pressure. A quick-inflating valve preset to 4.5 bar is fitted for safety.
  • Air Jets: Assist in bead seating.
  • Bead Assist Arm (Optional): Includes a top bead roller, bead depressor arm, and bead depressor tool to aid in mounting and demounting, especially for low-profile tires.
  • Optional +4 Inch Sliding Jaw Kit (EAA0331G91A): Allows for increasing the turntable clamping capacity by 4 inches, accommodating larger diameter rims.
  • Optional Rapid Change-Over Kit for Mount/Demount Head with +4" Extension (EAA0304G80A): Enables quick substitution of the mount/demount head to handle rims with diameters greater than the tire changer's rated capacity, offering additional tire clearance.
  • Safety Restraint Arm (Optional): Positions over the wheel to hold it to the turntable during inflation.
  • Tire Lubrication: Emphasizes the use of approved tire lubricant for proper mounting and centering, and to prevent tire binding.
  • TPMS Sensor Awareness: Provides specific instructions for rotating wheels equipped with TPMS sensors to avoid damage during bead breaking and mounting.
  • Tube-Type Tire Servicing: Includes procedures for demounting, mounting, and inflating tube-type tires, with precautions to avoid damaging the tube.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and reliable operation of the tire changer:

  • Hexagonal Rod Cleaning and Lubrication: Periodically clean the vertical hexagonal rod with non-flammable liquid detergent and lubricate with oil (Fig. 6.0-1).
  • Moving Metal Parts Lubrication: Periodically clean and lubricate all moving metal parts.
  • Clamps and Plastic Protections: Clean the teeth of the clamps with a wire brush and replace plastic protections if worn (Fig. 6.0-2).
  • Mount/Demount Tool Plastic Parts: Periodically replace the plastic inserts in the mount/demount tool.
  • Pneumatic Cylinder Sleeves: Lubricate if necessary.
  • Plastic Parts Cleaning: Periodically wash all plastic parts with cold water and soap or window cleaner.
  • Bead Breaker Pads: Check and replace if worn.
  • Bead Breaker Supports: Check and replace if necessary.
  • Air Filter Water Drainage: Drain water from the air filter daily (Fig. 6.0-3, 'B').
  • Automatic Oiler Level Check: The machine is equipped with an automatic lubricator; regularly check the oil level (Fig. 6.0-3). When adding oil, disconnect the compressed air supply, remove screw 'A', add sufficient oil, and ensure seals are in position when reassembling.
  • Recommended Oils: Use only specified oils, such as Snap-on Air Tool Oil IM1PT, and avoid brake fluid or other non-recommended lubricants.

Safety Information:

The manual stresses the importance of safety with numerous warnings and precautions:

  • Read Manual Thoroughly: Operators must read and understand the manual before use.
  • Trained Technicians: The tire changer is intended for use by properly trained automotive technicians.
  • Mismatched Tires/Rims: NEVER attempt to mount or inflate mismatched tires and rims, as this can cause explosions, leading to serious injury or death.
  • Over-Pressurized Tires: Over-pressurized tires can explode, causing flying debris. Always wear safety goggles and never exceed the tire manufacturer's maximum inflation pressure.
  • Electrical Safety: Disconnect electrical and air supply before maintenance. Do not operate with damaged cords, use proper extension cords, and ensure correct grounding. Avoid wet surfaces.
  • Crushing/Pinching Hazards: Keep hands and body parts clear of moving components (bead breaker arm, mount/demount head, turntable jaws).
  • Eye Injury: Wear approved safety glasses to protect against debris, dirt, and fluids.
  • Tool Usage: Use correct tools, inspect and lubricate them frequently, and follow recommended procedures.
  • Work Area: Keep the work area clean, well-lighted, and free from obstructions.
  • Bystanders: Keep bystanders away from the work area during operation.
  • Anchoring: The tire changer must be properly anchored to a concrete floor.
  • TPMS Sensors: Exercise extreme caution when working with TPMS sensors to prevent damage.
  • Bead Seating: The bead seating process is dangerous; stand clear from the wheel and monitor pressure frequently. Use an appropriate type-approved cage for complete bead seating and inflation.
  • Noise: Wear hearing protection during bead seating due to high acoustic pressure (120 dBA).
