Thethirdwaytoselecta fontisto simplydescribewhatfontattributesyou
want.(Remember,selectingafontdoesnotmodifyafont.Youcan’tgetbold
or14-pointcharactersifyoudon’thaveaboldor 14-pointfontintheprinter.)
Inlistingtheattributesyouwant,itwillhelpyoutoprioritizethemthesame
wayyourLaserPrinter8does.Yourpnnterranksthevariousattributesafont
can havethisway(frommostto leastimportant):
orientation
symbolset
spacing(proportionalor monospaced)
pitch(charactersperinch)
fontheight(inpoints)
style(italicor upright)

The laser printer just zips down this chain of attributes one by one,
eliminatingfontsthatdon’tmatchwhatyouwant,untilitgetsdownto one
uniquefontthatmatchesyourrequest.If theprintermatchesdownto, say,
styleorweightbutcangonofurther,it willgiveyouitsclosestfontto your
request.
And if youdon’tspecifya particularvaluefor someattribute,the printer
assumesyouwantthevaluethatattributehadin the lastfontyouspecified
(orthedefaultvalueif you’vejustturnedontheprinter).Thiscansaveyou
someeffort:ifthefontyouwanthasanattributethesameasthecurrentfont,
youdon’thaveto specifythatattributeagain.
Orientation
Portrait orientationprints text across the width of a page. Landscape
orientationprintstextsidewaysup thelengthof a page.
The StarLaserPrinter8 is moreflexibleaboutorientationthan mostother
laser printers;it lets you simplyrotateany portraitfont to the landscape
orientationorviceversa.To startyouoff whenyouchangeorientation,the
printerresets all its marginsand its columnand line definitionsto their
