Overview

This document serves as the Installation, Operation, and Service Manual for Suburban Recreational Vehicle Drop-In Cooktops, specifically models SDN2 and SDN3. It is designed to provide comprehensive guidance for installers, owners, and service personnel to ensure safe and efficient use of the appliance.

Function Description:

The Suburban Drop-In Cooktops are designed for use in recreational vehicles (RVs) and are certified for use with LP/Propane gas only. They provide a cooking surface with multiple burners for preparing food. The cooktops are intended solely for cooking purposes and should not be used as a space heater, as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning and overheating.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: LP/Propane gas only. Conversion to natural gas is not permitted.
  • Models: SDN2 (2 burners) and SDN3 (3 burners).
  • Minimum Gas Supply Pressure: 11" W.C.
  • Maximum Gas Supply Pressure: 14" W.C.
  • Clearances to Combustible Materials:
    • Sides, Rear, and Bottom: 0"
    • Right Sidewall: 5 7/8" (SDN2), 5 5/8" (SDN3)
    • Left Sidewall: 5 7/8" (SDN2), 6" (SDN3)
    • Backwall: 8" (SDN2), 8" (SDN3)
    • Directly Above Cooktop: 24" minimum distance to combustible surfaces.
    • Maximum Overhead Cabinet Depth: 13"
    • Minimum Overhead Cabinet Height: 18"
  • Cut-out Dimensions (W x D):
    • SDN2: 16 3/8" x 11 5/8"
    • SDN3: 18 15/16" x 16 1/8"
  • Minimum Acceptable Spacing Between Adjacent Models: 3 inches.
  • Portable Countertop Requirements (if applicable):
    • Must support a minimum weight of 20 lbs.
    • Surface material rated for a minimum of 200°F continuous operation temperature.
    • OEM must provide a label stating the maximum weight that can be added to the portable countertop after installation (accounting for the cooking unit's weight, typically 20 lbs). For example, if mounting bracket is rated for 100 lbs, and the countertop and cooking unit weigh 40 lbs combined, the label should state "no more than 60 lbs. can be put on the counter top."
    • During storage, a clearance of 1" must be maintained from the top surface of the unit.

Usage Features:

  • Ignition: To light a burner, depress the knob and turn it fully counter-clockwise to the "Lite" position. Immediately light the burner by holding a long match near the burner ports. Hand-held ignitors designed for open flame burners may also be used.
  • Safety Precautions for Ignition:
    • Ensure sufficient gas supply; air in the gas line can delay ignition.
    • Do not attempt to light more than one burner at a time.
    • If a burner extinguishes, turn off the gas, wait five minutes, and then attempt to relight.
    • If a gas odor is present, do not relight burners; refer to the "What To Do If You Smell Gas" section.
  • Turning Off: Turn the appropriate control knob clockwise to the "OFF" position.
  • Flame Size: Adjust the flame to the outer edge of the utensil; a higher flame simply wastes heat and energy. The correct flame size depends on utensil size, material, and the food being cooked.
  • Utensil Placement: Turn pan handles inward or toward the back of the cooktop, away from traffic and children. Do not place handles over burners.
  • Unattended Operation: Never leave top burners unattended. Down drafts or improper installation can cause burners to extinguish, leading to gas escape. Boil-overs can also occur and ignite.
  • Cookware: Never operate a top burner without a pan in place. Avoid operating high-input burners on high for extended periods. Do not use cookware that extends beyond one inch of the grate or rests over two operating top burners, as this can cause excessive heat build-up and damage.
  • Gas Leak Procedure: If gas is smelled, do not light any appliance, extinguish open flames, evacuate the vehicle, shut off gas supply at the source, and call the gas supplier or fire department. Do not turn on gas supply until leaks are repaired.
  • Cabinetry and Air Supply: The cabinet housing the cooktop must be separated from other appliances to prevent combustion air supply from being affected by forced-air heating systems or other sources of positive or negative air pressure. Negative pressure can draw flames down, causing damage and potential injury. Positive drafts can lift flames, leading to uncontrolled gas escape.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Ensure all controls are "OFF" and the cooktop is cool before cleaning or disassembling.
    • Do not use oven cleaners, bleach, rust removers, steel wool, or abrasive cleaners on the cooktop or grates, as they can cause damage.
    • Use warm soapy water for cleaning burner grates, cooktops, painted surfaces, porcelain surfaces, stainless steel surfaces, and plastic items.
    • Clean spills as soon as possible.
    • Do not allow foods containing acids (lemon or tomato juice, vinegar) to remain on porcelain or painted surfaces, as acids can remove the glossy finish.
    • Allow warm porcelain surfaces to cool before cleaning to prevent burns or cracking.
    • Promptly clean spills from burner caps to prevent permanent staining.
    • Clean clogged burner ports or orifices with a small wire or needle, being careful not to enlarge the ports. Do not use wire brushes or brushes that may shed bristles.
  • Disassembly for Cleaning/Service:
    • Stove Top Removal: Remove the two thumb screws from the sides of the stove top, then lift the stove top clear of the burner box. Reinstall by reversing the procedure.
    • Grate(s) Removal: Remove the top, then squeeze opposite sides of the grate together and lift it free. Reinstall by reversing the procedure.
  • General Maintenance:
    • Do not obstruct the flow of combustion and ventilation air.
    • Regular maintenance, as outlined in the manual, including cleaning components and checking/replacing the burner orifice, is essential for safe operation.
    • Any damage to painted or porcelain enamel parts (cracks, chips, scratches) is not covered under warranty.
    • Ensure all connections are secure and gas pressure is correct.
    • Do not allow spill-overs to remain on stainless steel surfaces for extended periods, as this can cause pitting and discoloration.
