Overview

This document describes the Sunbeam Iced + Hot Coffee Machine (model SDP1500BK), a versatile appliance designed to brew both hot and iced coffee, and to froth milk for various coffee beverages. The machine aims to provide a convenient way to enjoy a range of coffee styles at home.

Function Description

The Sunbeam Iced + Hot Coffee Machine is an all-in-one brewing system that allows users to prepare both hot and iced coffee, along with hot froth or cold foam for milk-based drinks. It features a main brewing unit and an integrated frother. The brewing unit is equipped with a water reservoir, a brew basket for coffee grounds, and a brew spout. The frother includes a frothing jar with a whisk and a frothing jar mount. The machine is designed for ease of use, with dedicated buttons for different brewing and frothing functions.

For iced coffee, the machine is designed to brew directly over ice, ensuring a chilled beverage without excessive dilution. The process involves filling the included tumbler with filtered water to a specific mark, adding coffee grounds to the filter, and then filling the tumbler with large ice cubes. The "OVER ICE" button initiates the brewing cycle, which is optimized for iced coffee extraction.

For hot coffee, users can select their desired coffee cup or mug and fill it with water to their preferred amount. The water is then poured into the machine's reservoir, and coffee grounds are added to the reusable filter. The "HOT BREW" button starts the hot coffee brewing process. The machine is designed to accommodate various coffee strengths, allowing users to adjust the amount of coffee grounds for a bolder taste.

The integrated frother allows for the preparation of both hot froth and cold foam. Users can add milk to the frothing jar, selecting between "CAPP" (cappuccino) and "LATTE" line indicators for different milk volumes. The frother features "HOT FROTH" and "COLD FOAM" buttons, which initiate automatic frothing cycles. The whisk inside the frothing jar ensures proper aeration of the milk.

Usage Features

The Sunbeam Iced + Hot Coffee Machine is designed for straightforward operation. Before first use, it's important to read the safety precautions, which emphasize proper placement, water filling, and cord handling.

To make iced coffee, the process begins by unplugging the unit and filling the provided 650ml reusable tumbler with filtered water to the "WATER" mark. This water is then poured into the machine's reservoir, ensuring not to exceed the 475ml max fill line to prevent overflow. One to two scoops of coffee grounds, measured using the "Over Ice" side of the included scoop, are added to the reusable coffee filter. The shower head is rotated over the filter, and the lid is closed. The tumbler is then filled with large ice cubes to the "ICE" marking and placed under the brew spout. After plugging in the unit, the "OVER ICE" button is pressed, and its LED illuminates to indicate the start of brewing. The brewing cycle takes approximately 3-4 minutes, after which mix-ins can be added, and the straw and lid can be placed on the tumbler for enjoyment.

For hot coffee, the unit should also be unplugged initially. A desired coffee cup or mug is filled with water to the preferred amount, and this water is then poured into the reservoir, again observing the 475ml max fill line. Coffee grounds, measured with the "HOT" side of the scoop, are added to the reusable coffee filter. For a bolder taste, an extra 1/2 to 1 scoop of grounds can be used. The shower head is rotated over the filter, and the lid is closed. The mug is placed under the brew spout, and the "HOT BREW" button is pressed. After 3-4 minutes of brewing, mix-ins can be added.

The frother is used by ensuring the whisk is properly inserted into the frothing jar until a click is heard. For a cappuccino, 150ml of milk is added to the "CAPP" line, and for a latte, 200ml of milk is added to the "LATTE" line, without exceeding the "MAX" level. The frothing jar is placed on its mount, and the lid is replaced. Depending on the desired outcome, either the "COLD FOAM" or "HOT FROTH" button is pressed, and the illuminated LED indicates the start of frothing. The frothing cycle stops automatically. It is important not to remove the frothing jar during operation. The frothing jar should be handled by its silicone sleeve after use, as the bottom can become hot.

The machine also includes a scoop storage area and a drip tray for convenience. The reusable coffee filter and brew basket are designed for easy handling and cleaning.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of the Sunbeam Iced + Hot Coffee Machine.

Decalcifying the machine is recommended once a month to prevent mineral buildup from water, which can affect coffee taste and machine performance. Sunbeam Eco-friendly descaling sachets (EMA0015CL) are available for purchase. The decalcification process involves dissolving half a sachet in 450ml of warm water and pouring the solution into the water reservoir. The reusable coffee filter is placed in the brew basket, and the tumbler is positioned under the spout. The "HOT BREW" button is pressed to start a brew cycle. Once the descaling solution begins to pour, the "HOT BREW" button is pressed again to pause the pour for 1 minute, allowing the solution to work. After 1 minute, the button is pressed again to resume the pour. Once the cycle is complete, the tumbler's contents are discarded, and the coffee filter is removed. The tumbler, filter, and brew basket are then rinsed with clean water. The tumbler is placed back under the spout, and the reservoir is filled to the 475ml mark with clean water. A hot brew cycle is run, and the tumbler's contents are discarded and rinsed. This clean water rinse cycle is repeated one more time to ensure thorough rinsing of the machine.

For daily cleaning, the reusable coffee filter and brew basket are dishwasher safe and can be placed on the top rack. The frothing jar should be cleaned after each use. It is important to wait a minute or so before frothing again to allow the heater to cool, and to avoid touching the frothing warming plate as it remains hot after use.

The electrical base, power cord, and plug are not dishwasher safe and must never be immersed in water or other liquids. The included 650ml reusable tumbler, lid, and straw should be hand-washed only.

Troubleshooting tips are provided for common issues. If milk is not frothing, users should check that the whisk is properly inserted and that milk levels are within the specified lines. Trying a different type or brand of milk can also help. If coffee is not strong enough, adding more coffee grounds or using the "OVER ICE" setting for hot coffee (which pre-infuses the coffee) is suggested. If no ice remains after brewing iced coffee, using larger ice cubes is recommended, along with ensuring the tumbler is filled to the "ICE" marking. If coffee grounds are found in the coffee, it may indicate overfilling the reusable coffee filter, and using slightly less grounds is advised. The manual also confirms that a different tumbler or cup can be used for iced coffee, as long as the water-ground-ice ratio is maintained.
