Overview

The TC Helicon PERFORM-V is an ultimate mic stand-mount vocal processor designed to provide quick and easy studio-quality sound with expandable effects. It's a versatile tool for vocalists, offering a range of features to enhance live performances and studio recordings.

Function Description

The PERFORM-V serves as a comprehensive vocal effects unit, integrating various processing capabilities to refine and shape a vocalist's sound. Its core function is to apply a suite of effects, including pitch correction, reverb, echo, and doubling, to a live vocal input. The device also incorporates intelligent features like Auto EQ and Anti-Feedback to optimize sound quality and prevent common audio issues.

Usage Features

The PERFORM-V is designed for intuitive operation, with a user-friendly interface that allows for quick adjustments and effect selection.

  • Setup and Connectivity:

    • Power and Microphone: The device requires a 12V DC power supply. A microphone (either dynamic or condenser) is connected to the XLR input. For condenser microphones, +48V phantom power can be activated by pressing and holding the +48V button.
    • Headphones: Headphones can be connected to the dedicated output, and the headphone volume can be adjusted.
    • Music In: An auxiliary input allows for connecting external audio sources, such as a music player, for practice or performance.
    • Output: The processed vocal signal is sent out via an XLR output, typically to a mixer or PA system.
  • Gain Setting:

    • To set the input gain, hold the "SET GAIN" button for 2 seconds. While holding, sing loudly into the microphone. The LED ring will indicate the optimal gain level.
  • Effect Control:

    • FX ON/OFF: Individual effects can be toggled on or off using their respective buttons. A white LED indicates the effect is off, while a green LED indicates it's on.
    • Presets: The PERFORM-V allows users to save and recall groups of effects as "Presets." Any changes made to a Preset are automatically saved.
    • Effect Editing: To edit an effect, hold down the corresponding effect button. Turn the control knob to adjust the effect's volume or intensity, indicated by the LED segments filling up. After the effect level reaches its maximum, the LED ring resets and changes the style (sound) of the effect. The LED color also changes for each style, offering visual feedback on the chosen style.
    • Tap Tempo: The tempo for echo effects can be set by tapping the "TAP" button in time with the music. This tempo setting is global and not stored within individual Presets.
  • Key Vocal Enhancement Features:

    • Auto EQ: This feature automatically and dynamically applies EQ, compression, de-essing, and gating to the vocal input, optimizing the sound for clarity and presence.
    • Pitch Correction: The pitch correction function subtly "nudges" the vocal to the nearest semi-tone, helping to improve pitch accuracy without making a bad singer sound good.
    • Anti-Feedback: This intelligent feature helps eliminate microphone squealing. After all EQs have been used, Anti-Feedback will automatically reduce the level to prevent feedback.
    • Talk Mode (FX Bypass): The "TALK" button bypasses all effects, allowing the vocalist to speak to the audience without any processing.
  • "BEAM" New Sounds: The PERFORM-V can receive new sound presets wirelessly from a compatible device, expanding its sonic capabilities.

  • Pitch Meter: A visual pitch meter helps vocalists monitor their pitch, indicating whether they are flat, correct, or sharp.

  • Accessories: The device is compatible with accessories like the SWITCH-3 footswitch for hands-free control, and various TC Helicon microphones (e.g., MP-76, MP-75).

Maintenance Features

While the manual primarily focuses on usage, some aspects relate to maintaining optimal performance:

  • Updates & Presets: The device can be updated, and new presets can be downloaded from the tc-helicon.com website using the VoiceSupport software. This ensures the PERFORM-V stays current with the latest features and sound enhancements.
  • Placement for Feedback Prevention: For optimal performance and to prevent feedback, it is recommended to place the microphone behind the main speakers. This is a crucial aspect of maintaining a clear and feedback-free sound environment during live performances.
  • Full Manual Access: Users are encouraged to visit tc-helicon.com to download the full manual, which provides comprehensive information on all features, troubleshooting, and best practices for maintaining the device's performance.

In summary, the TC Helicon PERFORM-V is a powerful and user-friendly vocal processor designed to elevate vocal performances with a rich array of effects, intelligent sound optimization, and intuitive controls, all within a robust, mic stand-mountable form factor.
