This
unit
includes
a
highly
sensitive
ferrite-bar
antenna
for
reception
of
AM
broadcasts
and,
therefore,
there
should
be
no
necessity
for
connection
of
an
outside
antenna
except
in
an
area
where
signals
are
especially
weak.
FERRITE-BAR
ANTENNA
While
listening
to
an
AM
broadcast,
move
the
ferrite-bar
antenna
away
from
the
surface
of
the
rear
panel
and
secure
it
in
the
position
where
reception
is
best.
Note:
If
the
AC
power
cord
or
speaker
wires
are
near
the
ferrite-bar
antenna,
interference
noise
may
be
heard.
Never
lift
or
carry
this
unit
by
using
the
ferrite-bar
antenna
as
a
handle.
In
weak-signal
areas
distant
from
broadcast
stations,
or
ina
reinforced
concrete
building,
this
ferrite-bar
antenna
alone
may
fail
to
provide
good
reception
of
AM
broadcasts.
If
so,
connect
a
length
of
vinyl
wire
to
the
AM
antenna
terminal
(marked
“AM
ANT,”’
on
the
rear
panel).
Then
place
this
wire
outdoors
and
use
it
for
an
antenna
terminal
a
short
distance
away
from
the
building.
Because
the
sensitivity
of
an
outdoor
antenna
varies
greatly
with
its
position,
install
it
in
the
position
which
affords
the
best
reception
while
actually
listening
to
a
broadcast.
For
safety
reasons,
the
antenna
should
include
a
lightning
arrester.

wire
When
the
unit
is
correctly
grounded,
noise
interference
during
broadcast
reception
is
reduced.
When
grounding,
use
vinyl-covered
wire
and add
a
copper
strap
to
the
end
of
the
wire,
which
should
either
be
buried
or
connected
to
a
water
pipe
for
efficient
grounding.
Absolutely
never
attempt
to
connect
this
wire
to
a
gas
pipe.

ABOUT
MULTI-PATH
DISTORTION
FM
signals,
in
the
same
way
as
light
waves,
have
a
tendency
to
move
in
a
straight
line,
and,
when
they
encounter
an
obstruction,
are
reflected.
Because
of
this
characteristic,
if
there
are
tall
buildings,
mountains
or
other
similar
ob-
structions
nearby,
signals
which
are
received
directly
from
the
broadcasting
station
antenna
and
signals
which
are
reflected
from
the
obstruction
will
reach
the
receiving
antenna
simultaneously,
and
the
interference
which
results
when
the
two
signals
mix
is
known
as
multi-path
interfer-
ence
and
causes
distortion.
Such
distortion
is
called
‘‘multi-path
distortion.’’
This
signal
distortion
passes
through
the
IF
stage
of
the
tuner
and
ultimately
appears
as
distortion
in
the
reproduced
sound.
In
order
to
receive
FM
broadcasts
in
the
optimum
condi-
tion,
therefore,
it
is
necessary
to
install
a
special
antenna
for
FM
reception,
and
to
face
it
in
the
direction
in
which
the
reception
of
such
multi-path
distortion
is
minimized.
For
this
reason,
this
unit
includes
special
multi-path
output
terminals
which
are
used
for
the
detection
of
multi-path
distortion.
