section are to be u se d as an aid in locating malfunctioning

N ote that some troubleshooting- p roce d ure boxes on
each chart contain numbers along their lower edges . These
numbers i d entify the applicable schematic d iagram(s) to
be u se d when performing the action s p ecifie d in the box .

Sp
ecific notes may b e called out in
the troubleshooting-chart boxes . These notes are locate d
on
the inner p anels of the fol dout p ages . Specific N otes
contain proce d ures or a dd itional information to be u sed in
p erforming the p articular troubleshooting step called for in
that box . General N otes contain information that pertains
to the overall troubleshooting procedure .
Some malfunctions, especial l y those involving multi p le
simultaneous failures, may r equire more elaborate trouble-
shooting approaches with references to circuit descriptions
in the "Theory of Operation" section of this manual .

Information regarding color codes and markings of
resistors and capacitors is locate d in the color-co d ing
illustration (Figure 9-1) at the b eginning of the "Diagrams"
section .
RESISTOR COLOR CODE . R esistors use d i n t his instru-
ment are carbon-film, composition, or precision metal-film
types . They are color coded with t he ΕΙΑ color code ;
h owever, some metal-film resistors may have the value
printed on the body . The color co d e is interpreted by
starting with t he stripe that is nearest to one end of the
resistor . Composition resistors h ave four stripes ; these
r epresent
two significant figures, α multiplier, and α
tolerance
value . M etal-film resistors have five stripes which
represent three significant figures, α multi
p lier,
an d α
tolerance value .
CAPACITOR MARKINGS . Cap acitance values of
common d isc capacitors and small electrolytics
are
marked
on the si de of the capacitor body . White ceramic capacitors
are color co de d in
p
icofarads,
using α
modifie d ΕΙΑ code
.
Di p ped
tantalum capacitors are color code d in micro-
f arads . The color dot indicates both t he positive lea d an d
t he voltage rating . Since these capacitors are easily

. The cathode end of each glass-

Multipin

Slot
numbers are usually molded into the holder . When α
connection is made to circuit-boar d pins, ensure that the
triangle on the h ol d er an d t he triangle on the circuit board
are aligned with each other (see F igure 6-1) .
