Overview

The Genie Lift Tools Access Deck is an operator's manual supplement for boom-supported elevating work platforms, designed to provide an elevated deck above the main platform floor. This allows personnel to extend their working height when platform access is limited and they need to reach a work area beyond their normal working height. The Access Deck is intended for use on specific Genie self-propelled boom products and is designed to comply with ANSI/CSA market requirements, with use prohibited in other markets.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Access Deck is to provide an elevated working surface for operators on Genie boom-supported elevating work platforms. This accessory enhances the reach capabilities of the boom by allowing an occupant to stand at a higher elevation within the platform, effectively extending their working height. It is designed to be securely mounted on the mid-rails of the platform, never on the top rail, and must be used in conjunction with a handle assembly for stability. The system includes locking mechanisms to ensure secure installation and prevent accidental disengagement during use.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Access Deck comes in two main sizes, corresponding to the platform size of the boom lift:

  • Access Deck for 8 ft Platform: Weighs 36 lbs (16 kg).
  • Access Deck for 6 ft Platform: Weighs 29 lbs (13 kg).

It is crucial to note that the weight of the Access Deck assembly must be subtracted from the rated platform capacity of the machine. The combined weight on the Access Deck must not exceed 300 lbs (136 kg).

The Access Deck is approved for use on a wide range of Genie S-series, SX-series, Z-series, and ZX-series boom lifts. The manual provides detailed lists of approved models for both 6 ft and 8 ft platforms, including specific serial number ranges. For example, for 6 ft platforms, approved models include S-40/45 (from S4016H-22550), S-60/65 (from S60H-36659), and Z-45/25 (from Z4525N-57509), among many others. For 8 ft platforms, approved models include S-40/45 (from S40-001), S-60/65 (from S60-653), and Z-60/34 (from Z60-001), also among others.

The Access Deck is compatible with specific platform configurations:

  • Side entry swing gate platforms with 2 sliding mid-rails.
  • TRI entry platforms (8 ft TRI entry platforms with three sliding mid-rails are permitted; 6 ft TRI entry platforms are prohibited).
  • Front entry platforms with single sliding mid-rail (8 ft only). Use on all other platforms is prohibited.

The Access Deck cannot be properly installed on platforms equipped with certain options, including:

  • Panel cradle
  • Center mounted swing gate
  • Genie Fall Arrest Bar
  • Half mesh or Full mesh
  • Aircraft Protection

Usage Features:

The Access Deck is designed for specific operational guidelines to ensure worker safety:

  • Fall Protection: The owner/employer/user/operator is responsible for providing fall protection for the boom operator. A "qualified person" must design the work space and the Access Deck system to ensure worker safety, adhering to fall protection regulations and systems. Occupants must wear a safety belt or harness in accordance with governmental regulations, attaching the lanyard to the anchor provided in the platform. The lanyard should be 6 ft retractable.
  • Stability: The boom must be on a firm, level surface when using the Access Deck. The boom should not be operated while using the Access Deck.
  • Installation: The deck assembly must be installed on the mid-rails of the platform. The installation process involves sliding the right side of the deck assembly against the mid-rail, pulling a locking pin on the left side to release the locking cam, and lowering the deck assembly until it is fully seated and the locking cam engages with an audible click. Vertical rail lock forming components are installed to further secure the deck, along with quick release pins and steel lanyards.
  • Handle Assembly: The handle assembly must be mounted and accessible near the Access Deck whenever the deck is mounted. It is secured to the platform railing using U-bolts and nylock flange nuts. The handle rotates to a vertical position and is secured with a lock pin. A rubber bumper on the handle is adjusted to sit firmly against the handle for stability.
  • Operator Presence: A person trained in the operation of the Genie boom must remain on the ground near the machine base controls to prevent unauthorized use and to prevent the machine from being operated while using the Access Deck.
  • Prohibited Actions: Operators must not sit, stand, or climb on the platform guard rails and Access Deck toeboard. A firm footing must be maintained on the platform or Access Deck floor at all times. The boom should not be operated once the operator has tied off and is standing on the Access Deck. The Access Deck should not be used with ice, grease, or debris on the mid-rail surfaces.

Maintenance Features:

The manual outlines several inspection requirements:

  • Pre-operation Inspection: Before each use, operators must ensure that all manuals (operator's, safety, responsibilities, and supplements) are complete, legible, and stored in the platform's container. All decals must be legible and in place. The Access Deck itself must be checked for damage or wear, improperly installed, loose or missing parts, and unauthorized modifications. This includes checking nuts, bolts, other fasteners, cracks in welds or structural components, dents or damage to the Access Deck, and the platform mounting location (ensuring it is undamaged and clear of debris, ice, oily, and slippery surfaces).
  • Annual Inspection: A comprehensive annual inspection is required. This includes checking for missing or loose components, ensuring all fasteners are properly tightened, inspecting all components for damage or wear (cracks, bends, corrosion), inspecting all welds for cracks, verifying free rotation of the Access Deck about the right wear-pad slot on the mid-rail, checking that the locking cam engages the mid-rail with an audible click and locks fully with the pop pin on the deck, verifying that the pop pin on the step engages in both open and closed positions with an audible click, and ensuring the handle can freely rotate around the shoulder bolt and that the detent pin and lock engage both up and down.
  • Inspection After a Fall: In the event of an operator fall, both the Access Deck and the Genie boom must be immediately removed from service and inspected by a "qualified person." If they pass the inspections, they may be returned to service. This inspection involves checking all structural components of both the Access Deck and the Genie boom, replacing any bent or damaged components, replacing any components with cracked welds, and replacing all mounting fasteners for the Access Deck. Following this, an Annual Inspection on the Access Deck and a Pre-Operation Inspection on both the Access Deck and the Genie boom must be performed.

The manual also provides a list of decals and their part numbers for both 8 ft and 6 ft Access Decks, emphasizing the importance of legible and in-place decals. This includes decals for lanyard/fall arrest/fall restraint and maximum capacity.
