Definitions and Units
ppm = parts per million:
Common unit to describe gas concentrations. 1ppm corresponds to 1cm³ Gas in 1m³
air. 1ppm = 0.0001Vol.%, 1000ppm = 0.1 Vol.%.
Lower explosion limit:
At certain gas concentrations in the air, combustible gases reach a point at which there
is an explosion if exposed to ignition sources. This lower explosion limit (sometimes
referred to as lower ignition limit) is reached at different gas concentrations, depending
on the type of gas. Methane has a lower ignition limit of 4.0-4.4Vol.% (= 40000 to
44000ppm).
