(c)ThecauseoftheexcessivedifferencemustbedeterminedbyanFAAapprovedPart145
PropellerRepairStationorinternationalequivalent.
(3)Bladeanglesplitisameasurementoftheangledifferencesbetweenallthebladesinthesame
propeller.Thisvalueismuchmorecriticalthanrotationalplaydescribedabove,asahighblade
anglesplitmayindicateinternalproblems.Whilesuchanglesplitisveryrare,theoperatormay
wanttomeasureitifaproblemissuspected,mostnotablybyamarkedincreaseinpropeller
vibrationlevels.Bladeanglesplitmaybecheckedasfollows:
(a)Byhand,twistallofthepropellerbladestowardlowpitch.Thiswilleliminateanyplayin
thepropellerlinkage,andreducethepossibilityofafalseanglereading.
(b)Usingapropellerprotractorattheappropriatereferencestation,measuretheangleofeach
blade.

Ifmeasurementsdiffergreatly(morethan0.2degrees)betweenbladesonthesame
propeller,excessivewearordamagetointernalpartsmayexist.

Ifthebladeanglesplitisinexcessof0.2degrees,thepropellermustberemoved
fromserviceandoverhauledatanFAAapprovedPart145PropellerRepairStation
orinternationalequivalentbypersonneltrainedtooverhaulMcCauleycomposite
propellers.
11.EngineOilContaminationInspectionRequirements
A.AnypropellerexposedtoengineoilcontaminationmustberemovedandsenttoanFAAapproved
Part145PropellerRepairStationorinternationalequivalentforinspection.Refertotheservice
informationoftheenginemanufacturertodetermineifoilcontaminationhasoccurredortodetermine
theacceptableamountofmetalparticlesallowedinengineoil.
12.FireInspection
A.Anypropellerexposedtoreorexcessiveheatisconsideredunairworthyandmustberemoved
fromserviceandscrapped.Apropellerisconsideredexposedtoreorexcessiveheatifafterthe
suspectedexposureitshowsanyofthefollowingconditions:
(1)Bubbledpaint.
(2)Discoloredpaint.
(3)Discoloredmetal.
(4)Meltedareas.
