Overview

The Titan Attachments Finish Mower Series, encompassing models FM48, FM60, and FM72, is a robust implement designed for efficient and clean grass cutting. This owner's manual provides comprehensive instructions for its installation, operation, and maintenance, emphasizing safety as a paramount concern throughout all stages of use.

Function Description

The Finish Mower is primarily designed for maintaining lawns, fields, and other grassy areas, providing a smooth, even cut. It attaches to a tractor via a three-point hitch system and is powered by the tractor's Power Take-Off (PTO). The mower's design incorporates multiple blades that rotate to cut grass, with a discharge guide to direct clippings. Its wheel bracket assembly allows for adjustable mowing heights, ensuring versatility across different terrains and desired grass lengths. The implement is engineered to deliver a high-quality finish, making it suitable for both residential and commercial landscaping tasks where a manicured appearance is desired.

Usage Features

Operating the Finish Mower requires careful adherence to safety protocols and specific operational guidelines to ensure both user safety and optimal performance. Before any operation, users are instructed to thoroughly read the operator's manual and familiarize themselves with all safety signs on the mower. These signs, marked with "Danger," "Warning," or "Caution," highlight potential hazards and unsafe practices that could lead to injury or death if ignored. Unauthorized modifications to the mower are strictly prohibited as they can compromise its function and safety.

Key operating safety features include ensuring all safety signs are clean and legible, and replacing any that are damaged or missing. All shields must be in place and in good condition before operation to protect against moving parts. It is crucial to ensure that the area around the mower is clear of bystanders before starting. The mower should only be started and operated from the operator's station on the power unit, and no riders are permitted on the implement. Before servicing, adjusting, repairing, or unplugging the mower, the engine must be stopped, the brake set, the key removed, and all moving parts allowed to come to a complete stop. The mower should never be operated over 540 rpm PTO speed. Prior to cutting, the cutting area should be inspected and cleaned of any debris. The mower should never be operated in the raised position. Users are advised against wearing loose-fitting clothing during operation to prevent entanglement with moving parts. Hands, feet, clothing, and hair must be kept clear of all moving components. All bystanders must be kept away from the unit while it is operating. Finally, before starting the tractor, all controls must be checked to ensure they are in neutral.

For field operation, the mower performs best on dry grass. Slower cutting speeds and occasional cleaning may be necessary when cutting damp or wet grass. The PTO must run at its full 540 rpm for the best cut; slower speeds or double cutting might be required for very high grass. A higher blade setting is recommended for rough areas to prevent scalping the surface. To optimize power usage and blade wear, it is advised to cut counterclockwise so that grass clippings are thrown onto already cut grass. Blades should be sharpened if they tear grass instead of cutting cleanly. When cutting corners, users should slow down to avoid leaving uncut strips of grass.

Transporting the mower also has specific safety requirements. It should not be transported on public roads without a slow-moving vehicle sign and flashers on the tractor. The mower must never be in operation during transport. When traveling with a raised mower, the speed should be slow enough to maintain the stability of the tractor.

Disconnecting the mower from the tractor involves parking it on a firm, level area and cleaning it. The mower should be lowered until the load is off the hitch arms, after which the hitch arms and PTO shaft can be disconnected. To prevent rust during storage, the mower should be covered.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and safe operation of the Finish Mower. The manual outlines several key maintenance procedures.

Gearbox: The gearbox should be filled with SAE 90 oil to the bottom of the level plug. The oil level should be checked before initial use and at regular intervals (approximately every 40 hours) to ensure it is maintained.

Grease: Greasing is critical for various moving parts. Wheel yokes, wheel bushings, and PTO u-joints should be greased approximately every 8 hours. Before the first use, wheel bushings should be greased until grease is visible at the ends of the wheel hub. The telescoping PTO tube and the quick-release collars on the ends of the shaft require greasing about every 20 hours. All grease fittings should be cleaned before injecting grease, and any damaged or missing fittings must be replaced immediately. If safety chains are used with the PTO shaft, the shield bearings must be kept lubricated.

Shielding: All shielding must be kept in place and repaired or replaced if damaged to ensure operator safety.

Blades: When replacing or grinding blades, all three blades must be replaced or reground simultaneously to maintain proper balance in the cutting unit. Before attempting to remove blades, the mower must be securely blocked up. Heavy leather gloves should be worn when handling sharp blades. The center bolt and lock washer must be securely tightened when replacing blades. It is crucial to always replace the lock washer with an extra heavy-duty one supplied with the spindle.

Belts: Belt guards need to be removed to check belt tightness. The center of the belt span should deflect about 10mm with nominal pressure. If the belts slip or are too loose, the bolts holding the gearbox must be loosened. The threaded tightener rod on the gearbox mount is used to tighten the belts. Once properly tightened, the rod should be locked in place, and the gearbox bolts re-tightened. Belt guards must then be replaced. Changing belts follows a similar procedure, but the belts will need to be loosened further for removal. Belts should always be replaced in matched sets to ensure even wear and performance.

The manual also stresses that all safety signs on the mower must be in good condition and clearly legible at all times. This comprehensive approach to maintenance ensures the mower remains in optimal working condition and continues to operate safely and effectively.
