Why won't my Toro Riding mower engine start?

      nicolebergAug 26, 2025
If your Toro Riding mower engine won't start, starts hard, or fails to keep running, several factors could be at play. First, ensure the fuel tank isn't empty and the fuel valve is open. Check that the choke is on and the air cleaner isn't dirty; clean or replace the air cleaner element if needed. Make sure the spark plug wire(s) is securely connected and the spark plug(s) isn't damaged—replace if necessary, ensuring correct gapping. Also, verify that the fuel filter isn't clogged with dirt. If the oil level in the crankcase is low, add oil. If the fuel system contains dirt, water, or stale fuel or the fuel tank has incorrect fuel, it's best to contact an Authorized Service Dealer.

If the starter on your Toro Lawn Mower isn't cranking, make sure the blade control switch is disengaged and the motion control levers are in the brake position. Ensure that you are seated. Check the battery charge and charge if needed. Also, inspect the electrical connections for corrosion or looseness, and replace the fuse if it's blown.
