Servicing the Air Cleaner
Clean the air filter after ev er y 50 operating hours
or ev er y 3 months , whic hev er occurs first.
R e place the air filter after ev er y 300 operating
hours or yearly , whic hev er occurs first.
Note: Ser vice the air filter more frequently if
used in dusty areas .
Removing the Foam and Paper
Elements
1. P ark the mac hine on a lev el surface and
diseng ag e the blade control switc h.
2. Mo v e the motion control lev ers to the brak e
position, stop the engine , remo v e the k ey , and
w ait for all mo ving par ts to stop before lea ving
the operating position.
3. R emo v e the engine hood and engine duct to
access the engine components .
4. Clean around the air cleaner to prev ent dir t
from g etting into the engine and causing
damag e .
5. R emo v e the air cleaner co v er knobs and the
air cleaner co v er . Be careful to prev ent debris
from falling into the air cleaner base opening
( Figure 31 ).
6. R emo v e the foam filter element ( Figure 31 ).
7. R emo v e the paper filter element from the g rid
( Figure 31 ).

8. Inspect the paper and foam filters . R e place any
damag ed filters . Clean or re place dir ty filters .
Cleaning the Foam Element
1. W ash the foam element in w ar m, soapy
w ater or nonflammable solv ent. Squeeze the
element, but do not twist, and allo w it to dr y
thoroughly ( Figure 32 ). Do not use fuel as a
cleaning solv ent.

2. Dip the foam filter in clean engine oil, then
squeeze out all the ex cess oil ( Figure 33 ). T he
engine will smok e when star ted if too m uc h
oil is left in the foam.
