Thedualknobbedknife-to-reeladjustmentsystemin
thiscuttingunitsimpliestheadjustmentprocedure.
Thepreciseadjustmentpossiblewiththedual
knob/bedbardesigngivesthenecessarycontrol
toprovideacontinualself-sharpeningaction-thus
maintainingsharpcuttingedges,ensuringgood
quality-of-cutandgreatlyreducingtheneedforroutine
backlapping.
Priortomowingeachday,orasrequired,checkeach
cuttingunittoverifyproperbedknife-to-reelcontact.
Performthisprocedureeventhoughthequalityof
cutisacceptable.
1.Lowerthecuttingunitsontoahardsurface,shut
offtheengine,andremovetheignitionkey.
2.Slowlyrotatethereelinareversedirection,
listeningforreel-to-bedknifecontact.Ifno
contactisevident,turnthebedknifeadjusting
knobsclockwise,1clickatatime,untillight
contactisfeltandheard.
Note:Thereelmustcut1sheetofpaper,when
insertedatarightangletothebedknife,atboth
endsandthecenterofthereel.
Note:Theadjustmentknobshavedetentes
correspondingto0.022mm(0.0009inch)
bedknifemovementforeachindexedposition.
3.Ifexcessivecontact/reeldragisevidentbacklap,
refacethefrontofthebedknife,orgrindthe
cuttingunittoachievethesharpedgesneeded
forprecisioncutting(RefertotheToroManual
forSharpeningReelandRotaryMowers,Form
No.09168SL).
Important:Lightcontactispreferredat
alltimes.Iflightcontactisnotmaintained,
thebedknife/reeledgeswillnotsufciently
self-sharpenanddullcuttingedgeswill
resultafteraperiodofoperation.Ifexcessive
contactismaintained,bedknife/reelwearwill
beaccelerated,unevenwearcanresult,and
qualityofcutmaybeadverselyaffected.
Note:Asthereelbladescontinuetorunagainst
thebedknife,aslightburrappearsonthefront
cuttingedgesurfacealongthefulllengthofthe
bedknife.Youcanremoveburrsandimprove
cuttingbyoccasionallyrunningaleacrossthe
frontedge.
Afterextendedrunning,aridgeeventually
developsatbothendsofthebedknife.Round
offthesenotchesorlethemushwiththe
cuttingedgeofthebedknifetoensuresmooth
operation.
Note:Overtime,thechamfer(Figure22)
requiresgrinding,asitisdesignedtolastonly
40%ofthebedknifelife.
