This document describes the 8- or 11-Blade DPA Cutting Unit with a 7-inch Reel, designed for use with Reelmaster® 5510/5610 Series Traction Units. It covers models 03693, 03696, and 03697, all with serial numbers 315000001 and up. The manual provides essential information for operating, maintaining, and adjusting the cutting unit to ensure optimal performance and safety.
Function Description
The DPA (Dual Point Adjusters) cutting unit is a precision turf maintenance attachment designed to cut grass at specific heights. It utilizes a reel and bedknife system to achieve a clean, crisp cut, crucial for golf courses and other finely manicured turf areas. The unit's design allows for adjustments to the height of cut (HOC), aggressiveness of cut, and bedknife-to-reel contact, enabling operators to adapt to various turf conditions and desired results. The DPA system simplifies bedknife-to-reel adjustment, promoting continuous self-sharpening and reducing the need for frequent backlapping.

Usage Features
Adjustments for Optimal Performance:
- Bedknife to Reel Adjustment: A precise procedure using a 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) shim and cutting performance paper (Toro Part No. 125-5610) ensures proper bedknife-to-reel contact. Each click of the bedbar adjuster moves the bedknife by 0.022 mm (0.0009 inch).
- Rear Roller Adjustment: Spacers are used to adjust the rear roller brackets to achieve the desired height-of-cut range, as detailed in the Height-of-Cut Chart.
- Aggressiveness of Cut: The number of rear spacers determines the aggressiveness of cut. Adding spacers below the side plate mounting flange increases aggressiveness. All cutting units on a machine must have the same aggressiveness setting.
- Chain Link Positioning: The attachment point of the lift arm chain determines the rear roller pitch angle. Changing one chain link alters the pitch angle by 4.5°, while moving the U-bracket to the bottom hole adds 2.3°.
- Height-of-Cut (HOC) Setting: The desired HOC is set by adjusting the gauge bar and ensuring the front roller contacts it. The manual provides a comprehensive Height-of-Cut Adjustment Chart, including recommendations for groomer kits. For HOCs greater than 2.54 cm (1 inch), the High HOC Kit must be installed.
- Turf Compensation Settings: Spring adjustments transfer weight from the front to the rear roller, reducing marcelling or bobbing. This adjustment should be made with the cutting unit mounted to the traction unit, lowered, and pointing straight ahead. The compressed length of the spring should be 15.9 cm (6-1/4 inches).
Accessories and Kits:
- Grass Basket Kit: Collects grass clippings.
- Rear Lift Cylinder Kit: Limits cutting unit height for rear grass baskets.
- Rear Roller Brush Kit: Keeps the rear roller clean for consistent HOC and improved after-cut appearance.
- Groomer Kit: Rotating blades reduce grain and spongy turf, improve clipping integration, and lift grass for a cleaner cut.
- Broomer Kit: Enhances groomer effectiveness with brush strips for a full-width "brooming" effect.
- Comb/Scraper Kit: Fixed comb reduces grain and spongy turf, includes a scraper for the front Wiehle roller.
- High HOC Kit: Allows HOCs above 25 mm (1 inch) and improves after-cut appearance.
- Shoulder Roller / Collar Kit: Reduces overlap marks for warm season grasses.
- Short Rear Roller: Reduces double roller marks for cool season grasses.
- Full Front Roller: Produces more pronounced striping but raises effective HOC.
- Scrapers (for various rollers): Reduces grass buildup on rollers.
Maintenance Features
Lubrication:
- Each cutting unit has 6 grease fittings that require regular lubrication with No. 2 lithium grease. Lubrication after washing helps purge water from bearings, extending bearing life.
Reel Bearings:
- Periodically check for reel end play. Adjust by loosening the external set screw and slowly tightening the reel bearing adjustment nut until no end play exists. Overtightening should be avoided to prevent damage.
Bedbar Servicing:
- Removal: Involves backing off bedknife adjuster screws, spring tension nut, and loosening locknuts securing the bedbar bolt.
- Assembly: Position mounting ears between washer and bedbar adjuster, secure with bedbar bolts and washers (nylon washer on side plate boss, steel washer outside). Torque bedbar bolts to 27 to 36 N·m (240 to 320 in-lb). Tighten locknuts until end play is removed, then tighten spring tension nut until the spring is collapsed, backing off 1/2 turn.
HD Dual Point Adjusters (DPA) Servicing:
- Involves removing and installing components, applying anti-seize compound to bushing areas and adjuster screw threads, and securing with washers and locknuts. Torque specifications are provided for the adjuster shaft locknut and bedbar bolts. The compression spring is fully compressed, then loosened 1/2 turn.
Roller Servicing:
- The Roller Rebuild Kit (Part No. 114-5430) and Roller Rebuild Tool Kit (Part No. 115-0803) are available for comprehensive roller maintenance, including bearings, bearing nuts, and seals.
Bedknife Servicing:
- Checking and Adjusting: The dual knob bedknife-to-reel adjustment system allows for precise, continuous self-sharpening. Daily checks for light contact are recommended. If excessive contact or drag is evident, backlap or grind the cutting unit.
- Grinding: The manual provides a Bedknife Dimension and Grind Angle Chart, including service limits and recommended top/front grind angles for various bedknife types. The lead-in chamfer on the bedknife should not be too large to prevent turf tufting. The chamfer is designed to last only 40% of the bedknife life before requiring grinding.
Safety:
- The manual emphasizes reading and understanding all instructions in both the traction unit and cutting unit manuals. It warns against operating under the influence, keeping shields in place, wearing appropriate safety gear, and removing debris from the working area. It also outlines procedures for addressing abnormal vibrations or striking solid objects. All maintenance and adjustments should be performed with the engine off and key removed.
