Overview

This document provides installation instructions for the 0-100% Downflow Dry Bulb Economizer, designed for use with Foundation™ Packaged Cooling and Gas/Electric units ranging from 15 to 25 Tons. The economizer is compatible with Trane model BAYECON300* and E/GBC180-300 units.

Function Description

The economizer is designed to provide free cooling by utilizing cooler outdoor air when conditions are favorable, thereby reducing the need for mechanical cooling. It features both dry bulb and enthalpy-based changeover settings to optimize energy efficiency. The unit includes an outside air damper assembly, return air damper assembly, and connecting rod assemblies for proper air mixing and control.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Compatibility: Trane BAYECON300* economizer with E/GBC180-300 Foundation™ Packaged Cooling and Gas/Electric units (15 to 25 Tons).
  • Economizer Control Options:
    • Dry Bulb (standard): Enabled by outdoor air temperature (OAT) sensor.
    • Reference Enthalpy (ReliaTel Only): Enabled by outdoor humidity (BAYENTH300*) and return humidity/temperature (BAYENTH301*) sensors.
    • Comparative Enthalpy (ReliaTel Only): Enabled when outdoor air enthalpy is 3.0 BTU/lb. less than return air enthalpy, requiring outdoor humidity, return humidity, and return temperature sensors (BAYENTH301*).
  • Dry Bulb Changeover Settings (Field Selectable):
    • A: 73°F (22.8°C)
    • B: 70°F (21.1°C)
    • C (Factory Setting): 67°F (19.4°C)
    • D: 63°F (17.2°C)
    • E: 55°F (12.8°C)
  • Enthalpy Changeover Settings (Field Selectable):
    • A: 27 Btu/lb (63 kJ/kg)
    • B: 25 Btu/lb (58 kJ/kg)
    • C (Factory Setting): 23 Btu/lb (53 kJ/kg)
    • D: 22 Btu/lb (51 kJ/kg)
    • E: 19 Btu/lb (44 KJ/Kg)
  • Field Supplied Part: Tube Sealant (Trane recommends Sikaflex 221, SEL00439) for sealing end panels.
  • Electrical Connections: Uses unit wiring harness plug PPM2A for connection to the economizer wiring harness.

Usage Features

  • Field Installed Option: The economizer kit includes an outside air damper assembly, connecting rod assemblies (Carrier and Trane configurations), return air damper assembly, block-off, and a plastic bag of miscellaneous parts (screws, outdoor air temperature sensor, edge protector, installation/operation manual, rubber grommet).
  • Factory Installed Option: For factory-installed units, a block-off and screws are provided. These units require partial assembly and setup in the field.
  • Damper Configurations: The manual details specific assembly instructions for both Trane and Carrier unit configurations, including attaching connecting rods to the return air damper and proper positioning of the damper assembly.
  • Minimum Position Setting: The economizer allows for adjustment of the minimum ventilation position using a potentiometer on the ECA (Economizer Control Assembly). This ensures a baseline amount of fresh air is always introduced when the blower circuit is energized. The damper will open to this setting each time the blower circuit is energized and will close when de-energized.
  • Sensor Installation: Includes instructions for installing the mixed air sensor, ensuring proper placement and connection to wires 121A and 122A.
  • Block-off Installation: The block-off is designed to seal the opening between the economizer and the unit base when the economizer is in its operating position, preventing unintended air leakage.

Maintenance Features

  • Mist Eliminator Servicing: The manual provides clear steps for servicing the mist eliminators, which involves removing screws from the end panel, setting the end panel aside, removing brackets, cleaning the mist eliminators, and then reinstalling them. This ensures proper air quality and system performance.
  • Inspection: Before installation, users are instructed to unpack all components, check for shipping damage, and report any concealed damage within 15 days. Photos of damage are recommended.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes the importance of following all safety precautions, including proper field wiring and grounding, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and adhering to lockout/tagout procedures when servicing. It specifically warns about hazardous voltage with capacitors and the need to discharge them before servicing.
  • Environmental Concerns: Highlights the importance of responsible refrigerant practices and adherence to local and federal regulations (e.g., Federal Clean Air Act Section 608) for handling, reclaiming, recovering, and recycling refrigerants.
  • Corrosion Prevention: A notice warns against using non-recommended caulking/sealant, as it could lead to corrosion-related failures of refrigeration components. Trane recommends Sikaflex 221.
