Do you have a question about the Trane TWA0724-A Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is an installation, operation, and maintenance manual for Trane Odyssey™ split system air conditioners with Symbio™ controls. It covers heat pump condensers (R-410A) ranging from 5 to 20 tons, and R-22 dry charge units from 7.5 to 20 tons (60 Hz and 50 Hz).

Function Description

The manual describes the proper procedures for installing, operating, and maintaining air-cooled split systems. These condensers are available with single or dual compressor options. Single compressor units feature a single refrigeration circuit, while dual compressor/dual circuit models offer true stand-by protection, automatically starting the second compressor if one fails. During light load conditions, only one compressor operates to save energy.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides detailed model number descriptions for heat pump condensers, breaking down each digit to specify unit function, tonnage, refrigerant type (R-22 or R-410A), voltage, refrigeration circuit/stage, design sequence, service digits, efficiency generation, controls (Symbio™), coil protection, and communication options.

Tonnage (60 Hz):

  • 072 = 6 Tons
  • 090 = 7.5 Tons
  • 120 = 10 Tons
  • 180 = 15 Tons
  • 240 = 20 Tons

Tonnage (50 Hz):

  • 060 = 5 Tons
  • 076 = 6.25 Tons
  • 101 = 8.33 Tons
  • 156 = 13.0 Tons
  • 201 = 16.7 Tons

Refrigerant:

  • 2 = R-22
  • 4 = R-410A

Voltage:

  • 3 = 208-230 Vac - 3 PH (60Hz)
  • 4 = 460 Vac - 3 PH (60Hz)
  • W = 575 Vac - 3 PH (60Hz)
  • D = 380-415 Vac - 3 PH (50Hz)

Refrigeration Circuit/Stage:

  • A = 1 Compressor/1 Line/1 Stage (Single)
  • D = 2 Compressors/2 Line/2 Stage (Dual)

Controls:

  • S = Symbio™

Coil Protection:

  • 1 = Standard Coil w/ Hail Guard
  • 3 = Black Epoxy Pre-Coated Condenser Coil with Hail Guard (FIN/TUBE)

Communications Options:

  • 0 = No Option
  • 1 = Advanced Diagnostics and BACnet® BAS
  • 2 = Advanced Diagnostics and LonTalk® Communications Interface (LCI)

The document also includes dimensional data with height, width, and depth measurements for various models, as well as detailed drawings showing service panel locations, refrigerant gauge access, and mounting holes. Unit weights are provided for both R-410A and R-22 units, including shipping and net maximum weights, and corner weights for proper lifting.

Refrigerant charging data and pressure curves are listed, including estimated charge levels at ARI rated line lengths (25 feet) for various matched sets of condensers and air handlers. It specifies liquid and vapor line diameters for each configuration.

Usage Features

The manual emphasizes proper pre-installation procedures, including unit inspection for shipping damage, testing for leaks (units are shipped with a nitrogen holding charge), and lifting recommendations with spreader bars to prevent damage. Clearances are critical for proper operation, with minimum distances specified for walls, shrubbery, privacy fences, and adjacent units. Snow belt recommendations advise raising the unit to prevent snow blockage.

Installation involves meticulous refrigerant piping procedures, adhering to R-410A pressure requirements (higher than R-22) and using only R-410A rated service equipment. Brazing must be done with a dry nitrogen purge to prevent contamination. System evacuation to 500 microns is required after leak checks.

Electrical wiring instructions cover unit power supply, low voltage wiring for thermostats or zone sensors, and Symbio™ controls connections. All wiring must comply with national and local electrical codes, and shielded twisted pairs are recommended for communication signals.

The Symbio™ 700 controls support a "Service Test Mode" to energize various system components for startup tasks or troubleshooting. This mode can be initiated through the controller user interfaces or the Symbio Service and Installation mobile application.

Maintenance Features

The manual outlines a comprehensive maintenance schedule:

Monthly Maintenance:

  • Check unit wiring for tight connections and intact insulation.
  • Inspect and clean condenser coils for dirt and debris.
  • Check suction and discharge pressures in cooling mode against Pressure Curve values.

Annually (Cooling Season) Maintenance:

  • Perform all monthly inspections.
  • Check unit superheat.
  • Remove dust and dirt from the unit casing.
  • Remove corrosion and repaint any affected surfaces.
  • Check the control panel door gasket for proper fit and water leakage.
  • Check refrigerant piping and fittings for leaks.

Coil Cleaning (Tube and Fin):

  • Recommended at least once a year, or more often in "dirty" environments.
  • Involves removing panels, straightening bent fins with a comb, brushing off loose dirt, and then spraying a detergent solution (heated to 150°F maximum if desired) on both sides of the coil.
  • Rinse thoroughly with cool, clean water and repeat if necessary.
  • Reinstall components and panels, then restore power.

Control Circuit Features (Pre-Start Checks):

  • Discharge Temperature Limit (DTL): Shuts off compressor and outdoor fan(s) if discharge temperature exceeds set limit.
  • Low Outdoor Ambient Cooling: All Odyssey units with Symbio™ 700 controls have cooling capabilities down to 0°F as standard. An optional Low Ambient Accessory kit allows full capacity down to 0°F.
  • Evaporator Defrost Control (EDC): Stops the compressor if the indoor coil temperature drops below its setting, allowing indoor air circulation to defrost the coil.
  • Low Pressure Cut-Out (LPC): Stops the compressor and outdoor fans if suction pressure drops below the set limit.
  • High Pressure Cut-Out (HPCO): Shuts off the compressor and outdoor fan(s) if discharge pressure exceeds the set limit.
  • Internal Overload Protector (IOL): Embedded in the compressor, shuts it off if discharge temperature exceeds its design trip temperature.

The manual includes a "Maintenance Log" to record monthly and annual inspection data, such as ambient temperature, evaporator entering air (dry and wet bulb), compressor suction and discharge pressures, superheat, and subcooling.

Warranty Information: The warranty covers commercial unitary equipment rated 25 tons and under, and related accessories. It includes a basic warranty of twelve (12) months from initial start-up or eighteen (18) months from shipment date for defects in material and manufacture. A replacement part is furnished without charge for manufacturing defects. The sealed motor-compressor is covered for a second through fifth year if it fails due to a manufacturing defect. Exclusions include local transportation, service labor, diagnosis calls, and damage due to accident, abuse, improper use, external causes, freezing, corrosion, erosion, or deterioration. The warranty is conditional on written notice of defect within thirty (30) days of discovery.
