Overview

The Triplett SoniChek MC is a compact, handheld sound level meter designed for convenient and practical use, particularly in environments requiring broad frequency response. Its primary function is to measure sound pressure levels (SPL) with C-weighting, making it suitable for applications such as testing sound levels in home theaters, evaluating music performances, analyzing car audio systems, and other similar situations.

Function Description:

The SoniChek MC operates as a mini sound level meter, providing accurate readings of sound pressure levels. The C-weighting feature means it measures sound across a broad frequency range, which is crucial for assessing how humans perceive loud sounds, especially in high-fidelity audio applications. The device captures sound through an electret condenser microphone, processes the signal, and displays the sound level in decibels (dB) on its digital LCD. It offers a fast response time, allowing for quick and dynamic measurement of changing sound levels.

Usage Features:

The SoniChek MC is designed with user convenience in mind. Its ergonomic, handsized design ensures comfortable handling during measurements. The device features a large, auto-backlit LCD display, which enhances readability in various lighting conditions; an ambient light sensor automatically activates the backlight in low-light environments.

A key feature for practical use is its ability to capture and hold both maximum (MAX) and minimum (MIN) sound levels. Users can activate this function by pressing and releasing the MAX/MIN button. A single press activates MAX hold, displaying the highest sound level recorded since activation. Pressing it again activates MIN hold, showing the lowest recorded sound level. Holding the button down returns the meter to normal, real-time measurements. This memory function is particularly useful for monitoring sound levels over a period and identifying peak or trough values without constant observation.

The SoniChek MC also includes an Auto Power Off feature, which conserves battery life by automatically shutting down the meter after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity. This prevents accidental battery drain if the device is left on. For extended or stationary measurements, the meter is equipped with a tripod mounting thread, allowing it to be securely positioned and pointed at the sound source. A non-slip rubber grip further enhances handling security and comfort. The device uses a common 9V battery, making replacements readily available.

To ensure accurate readings, especially in outdoor or windy conditions, the SoniChek MC comes with a foam windscreen. This windscreen helps suppress noise caused by air movement across the microphone, which can otherwise be misinterpreted as actual sound by the meter. Users are advised to consider air movement as a potential factor when taking measurements.

Maintenance Features:

Maintenance of the SoniChek MC is straightforward and primarily involves battery management and general cleaning. The device indicates a low battery condition with a "BAT" symbol on the LCD, prompting the user to replace the 9V battery. Battery replacement involves removing the battery cover on the back of the device and installing a new 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.

For cleaning, the case should be periodically wiped with a dry cloth. It is crucial not to use abrasives or solvents on the instrument, as these can damage the casing or internal components. The microphone should be kept dry, and the device should be protected from shock and vibration to maintain its accuracy and longevity. When the SoniChek MC is not in use for extended periods, it is recommended to remove the battery to prevent potential leakage and store the instrument in a protected location with moderate temperatures and humidities.

The SoniChek MC is designed with double insulation or reinforced insulation for safety. Any repairs or servicing should only be performed by qualified personnel, and when servicing, only specified replacement parts should be used to ensure continued compliance with safety standards and the EMC Directive. Operating the instrument outside of its specified temperature and humidity ranges should be avoided, as this can lead to inaccurate results or damage.
