Overview

The Caroli Bar Mixer Shower is a thermostatic mixer valve designed for domestic use, providing a controlled and comfortable showering experience. It is suitable for a variety of water systems, including gravity-fed, pumped gravity, combination boilers, multi-point hot water heaters, thermal storage, and unvented systems. The mixer shower ensures thermal safety by stopping or reducing water flow if either the hot or cold supply is lost, preventing scalding.

Function Description

The core function of the Caroli Bar Mixer Shower is to blend hot and cold water supplies to deliver a consistent and safe showering temperature. It features a thermostatic cartridge that automatically adjusts the mix of hot and cold water to maintain the set temperature, even if there are fluctuations in the incoming water pressure or temperature.

The shower is operated via two main controls: a flow control on the left-hand side and a temperature control on the right-hand side. The flow control allows the user to turn the shower on and off and adjust the water volume from minimum to maximum flow. The temperature control enables the user to select their desired water temperature, with a preset maximum temperature stop to prevent accidental rotation to higher, potentially unsafe temperatures. This maximum temperature stop is adjustable during installation to suit user preferences, typically within a range of 35°C to 45°C, with a factory preset of approximately 38°C. An override button on the temperature control allows the user to exceed the preset maximum temperature if a hotter shower is desired.

The mixer shower is designed for exposed installation, meaning the valve body is mounted on the surface of the wall or panel, with supply pipework routed from the side, rising, rear, or falling. It connects to 1/2" BSP female elbow fittings in solid wall installations using dogleg connectors, which offer a degree of adjustment for pipework misalignment.

Usage Features

  • Temperature Control: The right-hand control allows for easy adjustment of water temperature. Rotating it clockwise makes the water cooler, while rotating it anti-clockwise makes it hotter.
  • Maximum Temperature Stop: A safety feature that prevents the temperature from being accidentally set too high. This stop is factory-set to approximately 38°C but can be adjusted during installation.
  • Temperature Override Button: To achieve temperatures above the preset maximum, the user can depress this button while rotating the temperature control anti-clockwise.
  • Flow Control: The left-hand control manages the water flow. Rotating it anti-clockwise turns the shower on and increases flow, while rotating it clockwise turns the shower off and reduces flow.
  • Thermal Safety: In the event of a loss of either the hot or cold water supply, the mixer shower will automatically stop or significantly reduce the water flow to prevent scalding, ensuring user safety.
  • Flexible Accessory Positioning: The shower head and riser rail (if supplied) can be positioned either above or to the side of the mixer shower, offering flexibility in installation and user preference.
  • Compatibility with Various Water Systems: The Caroli Bar Mixer Shower is versatile, suitable for a wide range of domestic hot water systems, including gravity-fed, pumped gravity, combination boilers, multi-point heaters, thermal storage, and unvented systems, provided the site requirements for pressure and temperature are met.
  • Flow Regulation (Optional): For high-pressure water systems, a flow regulator can be fitted into the outlet adaptor to reduce flow rates and conserve water.

Maintenance Features

  • Filter Access: The mixer shower includes removable filters at the inlets, which can become blocked by debris. These filters are accessible for cleaning by removing the unit from the inlet fittings. Regular cleaning of these filters is recommended, especially in commercial applications, to maintain performance.
  • TMV2 Verification: For TMV2 approved valves, an annual verification process is required to ensure the valve continues to operate safely and within its original set temperature results. This involves a cold water supply isolation test to check the fail-safe shut-off and temperature stability.
  • Descaling: In hard water areas, scale build-up can affect performance. The internal surfaces of the mixer shower may require descaling. If descaling is necessary, the unit should be removed from the pipework, and all rubber parts must be removed before the descaling process.
  • Non-Return Valves (NRVs): The mixer shower is equipped with non-return valves that prevent cross-flow between hot and cold supplies. These are designed for long life and typically require no maintenance, but their function should be checked during maintenance if temperature variations occur.
  • Cleaning: The exterior of the mixer shower should be cleaned using warm, soapy water. Abrasive or aggressive chemical cleaning products should be avoided as they can damage the surface finish and invalidate the guarantee.
  • Component Replacement: If temperature variations persist after checking filters, isolating valves, and NRVs, internal components such as the flow cartridge or thermostatic cartridge may need replacement. Spare parts are available for purchase.
  • Serviceability: The mixer shower is designed to be installed in a position that allows for easy access for future maintenance and commissioning, facilitating any necessary servicing.
  • Installation Instructions for Maintenance: The manual provides detailed instructions for cleaning filters and adjusting the maximum temperature stop, guiding users or qualified persons through common maintenance tasks.
  • Water Supply Isolation: The installation requires suitable isolating valves on both hot and cold water supplies, positioned as close as practicable to the mixer shower, to allow for independent isolation of water supplies for maintenance or servicing.
