Overview

The Tunstall Vi+ is a telecare device designed to enable independent living by providing a means for users to call for help and for monitoring their well-being. It integrates with various telecare sensors and can be programmed to communicate with control centers or personal recipients.

Function Description:

The Tunstall Vi+ serves as a central hub for a personal alarm system. Its primary function is to allow users to initiate alarm calls, either manually via a button on the unit or a connected personal trigger, or automatically through integrated telecare sensors. When an alarm is triggered, the Vi+ dials pre-programmed telephone numbers to alert caregivers or a monitoring center. It supports two-way voice communication, allowing the user to speak with the recipient of the alarm call. The device also includes features for monitoring inactivity, line disconnections, and power failures, providing warnings and raising alarms as configured.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: The Vi+ operates on DC power via an adaptor. It also includes a battery compartment for backup power, providing up to 40 hours of operation during power outages.
  • Connectivity:
    • Telephone Line: Connects to a standard telephone line via a LINE socket, allowing it to make and receive calls.
    • Accessory Socket (AUX): Used for connecting various telecare sensors and accessories.
    • Hardwired Input/Output: Provides additional connections for hardwired sensors or external devices.
  • User Interface:
    • Speaker: For two-way voice communication and audible announcements.
    • Home/Away Button (Yellow): Likely used to switch between different monitoring modes.
    • Cancel Button (Green): Used to cancel alarms, exit programming mode, and initiate programming sequences.
    • Status LED: Provides visual feedback on the device's operational status.
    • Illuminated Alarm Button (Red): Clearly indicates an active alarm state.
    • Ringer On/Off Switch: Allows the user to control the ringer for incoming calls.
  • Internal Components: Includes a battery compartment for backup power and a wall mounting point for secure installation.
  • Clock: Features a real-time 24-hour clock that automatically adjusts for daylight saving time. The clock is backed up by the battery for up to 40 hours during power outages.
  • Memory: Stores programmed telephone numbers, unit IDs, and various configuration settings.

Usage Features:

  • Alarm Initiation: Users can initiate an alarm call by pressing the illuminated alarm button on the unit or by activating a connected personal trigger (e.g., a pendant).
  • Telecare Sensor Integration: The Vi+ supports plug-and-play telecare sensors, which can be programmed to automatically trigger alarms based on specific events (e.g., fall detection, smoke detection).
  • Programming via Series Telephone: The device can be programmed using a standard telephone connected directly to its LINE socket. This method allows for:
    • Setting Time and Date: The clock can be set using a specific quick code, including options for daylight saving time zones and automatic CLI time updates.
    • Programming Telephone Numbers: Up to 10 alarm numbers can be programmed, with destinations configurable as Control Centers (CC), Personal Recipients (PR), or normal telephone (POTS) calls.
    • Deleting Telephone Numbers: Individual programmed numbers can be deleted.
    • Adding/Changing Unit IDs: Unique identifiers for the Vi+ can be programmed, which are sent to monitoring centers during an alarm call. Different Unit IDs can be assigned to different telephone numbers.
    • Deleting Unit IDs: Programmed Unit IDs can be removed.
    • Prefix Numbers: A prefix number (e.g., '9' for PBX systems) can be configured to be inserted before all dialed numbers.
    • User Options Codes: A simple two-digit code system allows for configuring various parameters, such as inactivity monitoring, line fail warnings (audio/visual), and electrical power audio fail warnings.
    • Quick Codes: A comprehensive list of quick codes enables various functions, including:
      • Resetting to default settings (with or without retaining radio triggers).
      • Force unit reset.
      • Deleting all radio triggers or the next transmitted radio trigger.
      • Enabling/disabling periodic calls and configuring pendant test reminders.
      • Demonstrating the pendant test reminder function (unit plays spoken messages).
      • Setting the destination type for telephone numbers.
      • Enabling inactivity monitoring for specific periods (12 or 24 hours).
      • Configuring event call behavior (silent/visual, silent/non-visual, restore to default).
      • Announcing the current date and time.
  • Range Test for Personal Triggers: The Vi+ has a range test feature that allows users to check the range of personal triggers without raising an actual alarm. This is done by putting the unit into programming mode and activating the trigger; the Vi+ will bleep and announce the trigger type if it's within range.
  • Destination Types: The Vi+ distinguishes between three types of alarm call recipients:
    • Control Center (CC): Expects a specific handshake from the control center.
    • Personal Recipient (PR): Requires a recipient with a touch-tone telephone.
    • POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service): A normal telephone call, similar to a speed dial button. It is crucial to set the correct destination type for proper communication.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Backup: The internal battery provides power during outages, ensuring continued operation and clock backup.
  • Reset Functions: Various reset options are available via quick codes:
    • Reset to default but retain radio triggers: Resets all functions to default settings, but keeps radio triggers programmed. Date and time remain unchanged.
    • Reset to factory defaults: Resets all programmed information, including telecare sensors and triggers, and all functions to default settings. Date and time remain unchanged.
    • Force unit to reset: Resets the unit while retaining all current settings.
  • Periodic Calls: The Vi+ can be configured to make periodic calls (e.g., every 30 days with an offset of hours) to check system functionality.
  • Pendant Test Reminder: A configurable reminder function for testing personal pendants, with spoken messages from the unit.
  • Monitoring of System Status: The Vi+ monitors for line disconnections and mains power failures, providing audio and visual warnings as configured, and can raise alarms if these conditions persist.
  • Unit ID Management: The ability to add, change, and delete unit IDs ensures proper identification of the device to monitoring centers.
