They are designed for installation
along a wall or lintel and just beneath
a smooth ceiling. Horizontal sidewall
sprinklers are generally used in lieu of
pendent or upright sprinklers because
of aesthetic, building construction, or
installation economy considerations.
The FR-1 Sprinklers have been de-
signed to operate with a particular fus-
ible element temperature rating and
heat sensitivity characteristic, as well
as to discharge water in a specific pat-
tern and quantity per square foot rela-
tionship. The combination of the per-
formance characteristics which are
associated with the FR-1 Sprinklers
have been proven to help in the control
of residential type fires and, therefore,
to improve the chance for occupants to
escape or be evacuated.
Fire sprinkler systems are not a substi-
tute for intelligent fire safety aware-
ness or construction materials and
practices required by building codes.

Do you have a question about the Tyco Grinnell FR-1 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The device described is a Model FR-1 Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler, available with a 17/32 inch (20 mm) orifice. These sprinklers are designed for fire protection in various applications, including residential, light hazard, and ordinary hazard occupancies.

Function Description

The FR-1 Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler is an automatic sprinkler designed to discharge water in a specific pattern to control or suppress fires. It is installed on a wall or partition, with the deflector positioned to spray water radially outward from the sprinkler. The device is activated by heat, causing a fusible link assembly to release and initiate water flow. It is crucial that the sprinkler is located to avoid blind spaces shielded from spray by partitions or other dwelling structures.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Orifice Size: 17/32 inch (20 mm).
  • Temperature Ratings: Available in 140°F (57°C) for RES/QR-EC applications and 165°F (74°C) for RES/QR-EC/EC applications.
  • Maximum Service Pressure: 175 psi (12.1 bar).
  • Nominal Discharge Coefficient (K-factor): 8.1 (116.8). Actual K-factor may vary from 7.4 to 8.2 (106.7 to 118.2) as permitted by listing standards.
  • Finishes: Natural brass or chrome plated. The link assembly for both finishes is black-coated for minimal obtrusiveness.
  • Frame Material: Die cast bronze per ASTM B176 (C87800).
  • Link Assembly: Fusible link type, designed to prevent cold soldering.
  • Deflector-to-Ceiling Distance: Typically 4 to 12 inches (100 to 300 mm) for FM standards, and 4 to 8 inches (100 to 200 mm) for residential applications (refer to Table A-1).
  • Deflector-to-Mounting Surface Distance: 2 to 6 inches (51 to 152 mm) for wall mounting, and 2 to 3 inches (51 to 76 mm) for soffit mounting in residential applications (Ref. Figure B-1).
  • Waterway Centerline: Located 7/16 inch (11.1 mm) below the deflector.
  • Minimum Ambient Temperature: 40°F (4°C) for wet pipe systems.
  • Maximum Ambient Temperature: 100°F (38°C) for residential applications.
  • Water Supply: Must be substantially free of contaminants and particles larger than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm).

Usage Features

  • Application Versatility: Suitable for residential (NFPA 13, 13D, 13R), light hazard (NFPA 13), and ordinary hazard (NFPA 13) occupancies.
  • Coverage Areas: Specific coverage areas (W x L) and corresponding minimum flow rates (GPM/LPM) and pressures (PSI/BAR) are provided in tables for RES, QR-EC, and EC applications. For example, a 16' x 16' (4.9 x 4.9 m) RES application requires 26 GPM (98 LPM) at 10 PSI (0.69 BAR).
  • Wetting Patterns: Nominal wetting patterns at UL and ULC listed minimum flow rates are illustrated in figures for representative QR-EC and EC applications, showing water distribution relative to walls and ceiling.
  • Obstruction Clearance: Specific guidelines are provided for the placement of sprinklers relative to ceiling-mounted obstructions (e.g., heating/AC diffusers, overhangs, light fixtures) to ensure proper water distribution. For example, the deflector must be located above an elevation where obstructions will not interfere with the spray pattern.
  • Wall Mounting Dimensions: Detailed dimensions are provided for wall mounting, including the distance from the heat responsive element to the mounting surface.
  • Residential Specifics:
    • Must be installed in wet pipe automatic sprinkler systems.
    • Must be within residential portions of occupancies per NFPA 13, dwelling units per NFPA 13D, or residential occupancies per NFPA 13R.
    • All sprinklers within a compartment must have the same heat response thermal characteristic and temperature ratings within 10°F of each other.
    • Minimum vertical clearance between the tops of free-standing partitions, room dividers, cabinets, storage racks, stock piles, etc., and the centerline of the sprinkler waterway is specified based on horizontal distance from the sprinkler (e.g., 32" (810 mm) for >9' (2.7 m)).
    • Cannot be located along walls with recessed range ovens, countertops, alcoves, wood/coal burning stoves, fireplaces, or wall ovens.
    • Cannot be used beneath soffits, above/below open-gridded suspended ceilings, or with beams, joists, or ducts within the coverage area (though they can be along boundaries).
    • Lintels of at least 5 inches (127 mm), preferably 8 inches (203 mm), should be used over passageways to reduce operations outside the fire area.

Maintenance Features

  • Inspection and Maintenance: Automatic sprinkler systems should be inspected and maintained according to NFPA 13A, NFPA 13D, and NFPA 13R, as applicable, and by a qualified inspection service.
  • Replacement: FR-1 Sprinklers must only be replaced with horizontal sidewall sprinklers listed for residential fire protection service, having the same nominal K-factor, same coverage area, and same or lower flow ratings.
  • Cleaning: Do NOT cleanse sprinklers with soap, water, detergents, ammonia, cleaning fluids, or other chemicals. Remove dust, lint, cobwebs, cocoons, insects, and larvae by gently brushing with a feather duster or soft-bristle brush attachment.
  • Testing: Do NOT test sprinklers with a heat source, as this can weaken or operate the fusible link assembly.
  • Freezing Protection: Wet pipe sprinkler systems must be maintained at a minimum temperature of 40°F (4°C) to prevent bursting of pipes or sprinklers due to freezing.
  • Obstruction Avoidance: When remodeling, verify that new construction (e.g., false beams, light fixtures, changing compartment walls) does not violate installation requirements. Adjust construction or sprinkler system as needed.
  • System Shutdown: Permission from proper authorities and notification of affected personnel are required before shutting down the main control valve for maintenance.
  • Owner Responsibility: The owner is responsible for maintaining the fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition.
  • Flammable Materials: Exercise suitable safety precautions in the use and storage of highly flammable and potentially explosive materials, as their rapid fire development can reduce the sprinkler system's effectiveness.
