General
Description
The Tyco
®
FASTFLEX is a unique
sprinkler drop assembly comprised of
the following: branchline adapter nip-
ple, stainless steel flexible hose with
two slip nuts, sprinkler reducer, and
lightweight ceiling bracket compo-
nents. (Refer to Figure 1.)
Using FASTFLEX can save time and
costs since the system can be in-
stalled in false ceilings without cut-
ting and threading pipes associated
with installing a drop, armover, and el-
bows. FASTFLEX makes it possible to
test and charge the system with wa-
ter before the ceiling grid is installed.
Once the ceiling grid is in position, the
FASTFLEX hoses can be reshaped to
suit the final sprinkler location without
draining the system.
FASTFLEX flexible sprinkler hose is
installed quickly without large and ex-
pensive tools. Ideal projects are of-
fices, schools, libraries, hospitals,
and shopping complexes. FASTFLEX
sprinkler hoses are for use on wet pipe
sprinkler systems only.
FASTFLEX offers the following fea-
tures:
Reduced labor costs. Using FAST-
FLEX will reduce labor costs by in-
creasing efficiency. The installation
rate is two to three times quick-
er when compared to traditional fit-
ting methods of installing sprinkler
drops.
Reduced need to recut sprinkler
drops. It is not necessary to adjust
sprinkler location if ceiling alignment
and level are changed.
More convenient work ow. Using
FASTFLEX eases bending and ma-
neuvering around ducts and trays in
congested spaces and for unusu-
al ceiling types and curved plaster-
board ceilings.

Overview

The Tyco FASTFLEX is a flexible sprinkler hose assembly designed for use in wet pipe sprinkler systems. It is comprised of a branchline adapter nipple, a stainless steel flexible hose with two slip nuts, a sprinkler reducer, and lightweight ceiling bracket components. This innovative design offers significant advantages in terms of installation time and cost savings compared to traditional rigid piping methods.

Function Description

The FASTFLEX system allows for the installation of sprinkler drops in false ceilings without the need for cutting and threading pipes, which are typically associated with installing drops, armovers, and elbows. A key feature is its ability to facilitate system testing and charging with water before the ceiling grid is installed. Once the ceiling grid is in place, the FASTFLEX hoses can be reshaped to accommodate the final sprinkler location without draining the system, offering flexibility and reducing rework.

Important Technical Specifications

The FASTFLEX is available in Model YN25, YB25, and YB28, with nominal assembly lengths ranging from 700 mm to 3700 mm.

  • Approvals: The device holds approvals from LPCB, VdS, FM, and UL, and is accepted by APSAD and CSTB. Specific details regarding laboratory approvals and design criteria are provided in the manual.
  • Inlet Connections: The inlet connections are available in ISO 7/1-R 1 and ISO 7/1-R 1-1/4 pipe threads.
  • Outlet Connections: Outlet connections include ISO 7/1-Rc 3/8, 1/2 inch NPT, and 3/4 inch NPT.
  • Construction: The Inlet Nipple is made of mild steel, and the Flexible Hose is constructed from SS AISI 304 stainless steel. Connections at each end of the flexible hose utilize a brass Slip Nut, NBR/CR o-ring, and Nylon W6 washer. The Sprinkler Reducer is mild steel, while the Reducer Bracket, Bar Fixing Clamps, and Support Bar are pressed steel.
  • Maximum Service Pressure:
    • LPCB: 16 bar
    • VdS: 16 bar
    • FM: 12 bar
    • UL: 13 bar
  • Sprinkler Compatibility: The system is designed for use with pendent sprinklers with nominal K57, K80, or K115.
  • Maximum Ambient Temperature:
    • YN25: 148°C (LPCB, UL)
    • YB25 and YB28: 107°C (VdS, FM, UL)
  • Minimum Bend Radius:
    • LPCB: 55 mm
    • VdS: 55 mm
    • FM: 150 mm for Model YB28, 200 mm for Model YB25
    • UL: 76 mm
  • Friction Loss: The manual provides detailed tables for friction loss calculations based on assembly length, number of 90° bends, and sprinkler reducer type, expressed in equivalent lengths of DN25 Sch. 40 pipe at C=120 in meters. For VdS, the nominal assembly length is multiplied by 12 to compensate for pressure loss, and an additional 2.3 m is added when using a 45° or 90° sprinkler reducer.
  • Bend Limitations (VdS): The tube assembly may not have more than one 90° bend or four 15° bends.
  • Support for Longer Hoses: For assembly lengths greater than 1800 mm, the flexible hose must be supported to the structure to ensure the maximum unsupported length does not exceed 1800 mm. It is recommended to secure the tube to a fixed mounting point every 600 mm for stability.
  • Minimum Radius Indicator (LPCB): For LPCB installations, all bends greater than 45° must be fitted with a MRI55 Plastic Clip Minimum Radius Indicator.

Usage Features

  • Reduced Labor Costs: FASTFLEX significantly reduces labor costs by increasing installation efficiency, with installation rates two to three times quicker than traditional fitting methods for sprinkler drops.
  • Reduced Need for Recutting: The system eliminates the need to adjust sprinkler locations if ceiling alignment or level changes, as the hoses can be reshaped.
  • Convenient Workflow: FASTFLEX eases bending and maneuvering around ducts and trays in congested spaces, and is suitable for unusual ceiling types and curved plasterboard ceilings.
  • Construction Advantage: Adjustments to ceiling levels can be made after installation without impacting sprinklers and drops.
  • Equipment Cost Savings: The system reduces costs by eliminating pipe wastage and reducing labor associated with cutting, threading, and sealing pipe threads.
  • Installation Guidance: The manual provides detailed step-by-step instructions for installation, including proper routing to permit draining, correct orientation of the inlet nipple's flow arrow, and specific torque requirements for connections. It emphasizes that flexible hoses are intended for direct connection to system piping and cannot be joined together to form longer hoses.
  • Ceiling Compatibility: The system is approved for use in various suspended ceilings, including Odenwald Systems, Richter Systems, Armstrong Systems (Board and Tegular with panel type "Prima Sahara"), and API Systems. These connections are designed for use in ceilings with grids that meet ASTM C 635 and C 636 standards, and are approved for Intermediate-Duty and Heavy-Duty structural classifications.

Maintenance Features

  • Owner Responsibility: The owner is responsible for maintaining the fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition, in compliance with the provided documentation and applicable standards.
  • Professional Inspection: Automatic sprinkler systems should be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local and national codes.
  • Pre-Maintenance Notification: Before closing a fire protection system control valve for inspection or maintenance, permission to shut down the system must be obtained from proper authorities, and all affected personnel must be notified.
  • Post-Maintenance Notification: After placing a fire protection system back in service, proper authorities and those responsible for monitoring alarms must be notified.
