Series LFII Residential
4.9 K-factor Pendent Sprinkler
Wet Pipe Systems
General
Description
TYCO Series LFII Residential 4.9K
Pendent and Recessed Pendent Sprin-
klers (TY2236) are decorative, fast
response, frangible bulb sprinklers
designed for use in residential occu-
pancies such as homes, apartments,
dormitories, and hotels. When aesthet-
ics and optimized flow characteristics
are the major consideration, the Series
LFII Residential Sprinklers (TY2236)
should be the first choice.
The Series LFII Residential Sprinklers
are intended for use in the following
scenarios:
wet pipe residential sprinkler sys-
tems for one- and two-family dwell-
ings and mobile homes per NFPA
13D
wet pipe residential sprinkler sys-
tems for residential occupancies up
to and including four stories in height
per NFPA 13R
wet pipe sprinkler systems for the
residential portions of any occu-
pancy per NFPA 13
The recessed version of the Series LFII
Residential Sprinklers is intended for
use in areas with finished ceilings when
used with one of the following:
A two-piece Style 15 Recessed
Escutcheon with recessed adjust-
ment up to 5/8 in. (15,9 mm) from
the ush pendent position.
A two-piece Style 20 Recessed
Escutcheon with recessed adjust-
ment up to 1/2 in. (12,7 mm) from
the ush pendent position.
The adjustment provided by either
Recessed Escutcheon reduces the
accuracy to which the pipe drops to
the sprinklers must be cut.
The Series LFII Residential Sprinklers
have been designed with heat sensi-
tivity and water distribution charac-
teristics proven to help in the control
of residential fires and to improve the
chance for occupants to escape or be
evacuated.
Corrosion-resistant coatings, where
applicable, are utilized to extend the life
of copper alloy sprinklers beyond that
which would otherwise be obtained
when exposed to corrosive atmo-
spheres. Although corrosion-resistant
coated sprinklers have passed the
standard corrosion tests of the appli-
cable Approval agencies, the testing is
not representative of all possible cor-
rosive atmospheres. Consequently,
it is recommended that the end user
be consulted with respect to the suit-
ability of these coatings for any given
corrosive environment. The effects of
ambient temperature, concentration of
chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity
should be considered, as a minimum,
along with the corrosive nature of the
chemical to which the sprinklers will be
exposed.
NOTICE
The Series LFII Residential Pendent
and Recessed Pendent Sprinklers
(TY2236) described herein must be
installed and maintained in compli-
ance with this document and the appli-
cable standards of the NATIONAL FIRE
PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (NFPA),
in addition to the standards of any
authorities having jurisdiction. Failure
to do so may impair the performance
of these devices.
The owner is responsible for main-
taining their fire protection system
and devices in proper operating con-
dition. Contact the installing contrac-
tor or product manufacturer with any

Overview

The TYCO Series LFII Residential 4.9K Pendent and Recessed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2236) are decorative, fast-response, frangible bulb sprinklers designed for use in residential occupancies such as homes, apartments, dormitories, and hotels. They are particularly recommended when aesthetics and optimized flow characteristics are a primary consideration.

Function Description:

These sprinklers are designed to activate in a fire situation, releasing water to control the fire and improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. The operation relies on a glass bulb containing a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, allowing the sprinkler to activate and flow water.

  • Minimum Sprinkler Spacing: 8 ft (2.4 m).
  • Maximum Coverage Area: Varies by temperature rating and flow, up to 20 ft x 20 ft (6.1 m x 6.1 m).
  • Hydraulic Design Criteria (Wet Pipe System):
    • For NFPA 13D and 13R systems, minimum required sprinkler flow rates are provided in Table A, based on temperature rating and maximum allowable coverage areas.
    • For NFPA 13 systems, the number of design sprinklers is the four most hydraulically demanding. The minimum required discharge from each of these four sprinklers is the greater of the flow rates in Table A or a minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft² over the design area.

Usage Features:

  • System Types: Intended for use in wet pipe residential sprinkler systems.
  • Residential Occupancies: Suitable for one- and two-family dwellings, mobile homes (per NFPA 13D), residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height (per NFPA 13R), and residential portions of any occupancy (per NFPA 13).
  • Recessed Version: The recessed version is designed for use in areas with finished ceilings, utilizing either a two-piece Style 15 Recessed Escutcheon (with up to 5/8 in. (15.9 mm) adjustment) or a two-piece Style 20 Recessed Escutcheon (with up to 1/2 in. (12.7 mm) adjustment). These escutcheons reduce the accuracy required for pipe drops.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Corrosion-resistant coatings are available to extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers in corrosive atmospheres. However, the suitability of these coatings for specific corrosive environments should be evaluated by the end user, considering ambient temperature, chemical concentration, and gas/chemical velocity.
  • Installation:
    • Pendent sprinklers are installed with the deflector parallel to the ceiling, hand-tightened into the sprinkler fitting, and then tightened using only the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench (P/N 56-000-6-387) on the wrench flats.
    • Recessed pendent sprinklers follow a similar process, but after installing the mounting plate, they are tightened using only the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (P/N 56-850-4-001). After ceiling installation, the closure is pushed over the mounting plate until it contacts the ceiling.
    • A leak-tight 1/2 in. NPT sprinkler joint requires a minimum-to-maximum torque of 7 to 14 lb-ft (9.5 to 19.0 N·m). Excessive torque can damage the sprinkler.
    • It is crucial not to compensate for insufficient adjustment in an Escutcheon Plate by over- or under-tightening the sprinkler; the sprinkler fitting position should be re-adjusted instead.
  • Obstruction to Water Distribution: Sprinklers must be located in accordance with NFPA 13D, 13R, and 13 obstruction rules, as well as criteria described in Technical Data Sheet TFP490.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: Automatic sprinkler systems are recommended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local requirements and national codes (e.g., NFPA 25).
  • Owner Responsibility: The owner is responsible for maintaining the fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition.
  • Cleaning: Sprinklers should only be cleaned by gently dusting with a feather duster. Avoid using sprinklers for hanging objects.
  • Replacement Criteria:
    • Sprinklers found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced.
    • Sprinklers that have been painted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory must be replaced.
    • Sprinklers exposed to corrosive products of combustion that have not operated should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping with a cloth or brushing with a soft bristle brush.
    • Any sprinkler damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or with a cracked bulb or lost liquid from its bulb must be replaced.
    • Do not install any bulb-type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or if there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. A small air bubble (approx. 1/16 in. (1.6 mm)) should be present when the sprinkler is held horizontally.
  • System Shutdown: Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance, permission from proper authorities and notification of affected personnel must be obtained.
  • Escutcheon Integrity: The absence of the outer piece of an escutcheon can delay sprinkler operation in a fire situation.
