Description
The Model TY-FRFS, TY-FS Special,
and TY-FS, Upright and Pendent, Flat
Spray Sprinklers described in this data
sheet are intended for installation in
accordance with CEA 4001 “Sprinkler
Systems Planning and Installation” or
EN12845 “Automatic Sprinkler Sys-
tems - Design, Installation and Mainte-
nance”, as applicable. They produce a
flatter spray pattern than standard
spray sprinklers enabling them to be
used with lower clearance above the
suspended open ceilings and in racks.
As necessary the 80K and 115K, Flat
Spray Sprinklers may be outfitted with
guards, shields, or guards with
shields. The guards may be used in
areas that makethe sprinklers suscep-
tible to mechanical or physical dam-
age, whereas the shields may be used
to help prevent the sprinklers from be-
ing wetted (cold soldered) from water
spray of higher elevation sprinklers.
Table A provides a detailed matrix of
the allowable combinations.
The Model TY-FRFS with its 3 mm
diameter heat sensitive bulb element
is rated quick response, the Model TY-
FS Special with its 4 mm diameter heat
sensitive bulb element is rated special
response, and the Model TY-FS with
its 5 mm diameter heat sensitive bulb
element is rated standard response
“A”.
CEA 4001 “Sprinkler Systems Plan-
ning and Installation” and EN12845
“Automatic Sprinkler Systems - De-
sign, Installation and Maintenance”
permits flat spray sprinklers to be used
in concealed spaces, suspended open
ceilings, and in racks.
WARNINGS
Model TY-FRFS, TY-FS Special, and
TY-FS Sprinklers, as well as
guard/shield accessories, described
herein must be installed and main-
tained in compliance with this docu-
ment, as well as with the applicable
standards recognized by the Approval
agency, in addition to the standards of
any other authorities having jurisdic-
tion. Failure to do so may impair the
performance of these devices.
The owner is responsible for maintain-
ing their fire protection system and de-
vices in proper operating condition.
The installing contractor or sprinkler
manufacturer should be contacted
with any questions.

IMPORTANT
Always refer to Technical Data
Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER
WARNING” that provides cautions
with respect to handling and instal-
lation of sprinkler systems and com-
ponents. Improper handling and in-
stallation can permanently damage
a sprinkler system or its compo-
nents and cause the sprinkler to fail
to operate in a fire situation or cause
it to operate prematurely.

Overview

The document describes the Tyco Model TY-FRFS, TY-FS Special, and TY-FS Flat Spray Sprinklers, Guards, and Shields, available in Upright and Pendent configurations with K-factors of 57, 80, and 115.

Function Description

These flat spray sprinklers are designed for installation in accordance with CEA 4001 "Sprinkler Systems Planning and Installation" or EN12845 "Automatic Sprinkler Systems - Design, Installation and Maintenance". They produce a flatter spray pattern compared to standard spray sprinklers, which allows for their use with lower clearance above suspended open ceilings and in racks. The sprinklers are activated by a heat-sensitive glass bulb containing a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. Upon reaching the rated temperature, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, allowing water to flow.

The Model TY-FRFS features a 3 mm diameter heat-sensitive bulb element, providing quick response. The Model TY-FS Special uses a 4 mm diameter heat-sensitive bulb element, offering special response. The Model TY-FS incorporates a 5 mm diameter heat-sensitive bulb element, rated for standard response "A".

Guards and shields are available for the 80K and 115K Flat Spray Sprinklers. Guards protect the sprinklers from mechanical or physical damage, while shields prevent them from being wetted (cold soldered) by water spray from higher elevation sprinklers.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Approvals: VdS Approved for installation per CEA 4001 or EN12845. Guards, shields, and guards with shields are also VdS Approved.
  • Maximum Working Pressure: 12.1 bar.
  • Discharge Coefficient (K-factor):
    • K = 57 LPM/bar^(1/2) (ISO 7/1-R 3/8 thread)
    • K = 80 LPM/bar^(1/2) (1/2" NPT thread)
    • K = 115 LPM/bar^(1/2) (3/4" NPT thread)
  • Temperature Ratings (Fluid Color):
    • 57°C (Orange)
    • 68°C (Red)
    • 79°C (Yellow)
    • 93°C (Green)
    • 141°C (Blue)

Usage Features

  • Installation: Sprinklers must be installed in either the pendent or upright position. Pipe thread sealant should be applied, and the sprinkler hand-tightened before final tightening with the appropriate W-Type Sprinkler Wrench (W-Type 6 for 57K, W-Type 7 for 80K and 115K).
  • Torque Requirements:
    • 1/2 inch NPT: 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9.5 to 19.0 Nm) for a leak-tight joint; maximum 21 ft. lbs. (28.5 Nm).
    • 3/4 inch NPT: 10 to 20 ft.lbs. (13.4 to 26.8 Nm) for a leak-tight joint; maximum 30 ft.lbs. (40.7 Nm).
    • Higher torque levels can distort the sprinkler inlet, causing leakage or impairment.
  • Guard Installation (Model G1): Guards are installed after the sprinkler is in place. The two halves of the guard are spread to pass over the deflector and then the "thread relief" portion of the sprinkler. Clips are then engaged and slid until they seat against the base. A Guard Installation Tool (P/N 56-000-8-597) or pliers can assist with this. The clips must be fully seated against the base.
  • Shield Installation (Model H1 or H2): For pendent sprinklers, the shield is installed over the sprinkler threads, followed by the attachment spring (for K115 sprinklers) which seats against the shield. The sprinkler is then hand-tightened and secured with the W-Type 7 Sprinkler Wrench. When correctly installed, the attachment spring will be slightly compressed, holding the shield firmly.
  • Guard and Shield Installation: For K80 and K115 pendent sprinklers, the shield is installed first, followed by the attachment spring (for K115 only). The sprinkler is then tightened, and finally, the guard is installed as described above.

Maintenance Features

  • General Maintenance: Sprinklers must be maintained and serviced in accordance with the provided instructions and applicable standards.
  • Pre-Maintenance Notification: Before closing a fire protection system's main control valve, permission must be obtained from authorities, and all affected personnel must be notified.
  • Replacement Criteria:
    • Sprinklers found leaking or showing visible signs of corrosion must be replaced.
    • Sprinklers that have been painted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory must be replaced.
    • Sprinklers exposed to corrosive combustion products that have not operated but cannot be completely cleaned by wiping or brushing must be replaced.
    • Sprinklers damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or with a cracked bulb or lost liquid must be replaced.
  • Annual Visual Inspection: Proper installation of sprinklers with guards, shields, or guards with shields should be verified during the annual visual inspection.
  • System Responsibility: The owner is responsible for maintaining the fire protection system in proper operating condition.
  • Professional Inspection: Automatic sprinkler systems should be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local and national codes.
