IMPORTANT
Always refer to Technical Data
Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER
WARNING” that provides cautions
with respect to handling and instal-
lation of sprinkler systems and com-
ponents. Improper handling and in-
stallation can permanently damage
a sprinkler system or its compo-
nents and cause the sprinkler to fail
to operate in a fire situation or cause
it to operate prematurely.

Description
The TYCO Model SW-20 and SW-24,
11.2 K-factor, Extended Coverage Ordi-
nary Hazard (ECOH) Horizontal Sidewall
Sprinklers, Standard Response are dec-
orative glass bulb sprinklers designed
for use in ordinary hazard occupancies
per NFPA 13.
The SW-20 provides protection of cov-
erage areas up to 16 ft. x 20 ft. (320
ft
2
), whereas the SW-24 provides pro-
tection of coverage areas up to 16 ft. x
24 ft. (384 ft
2
), as compared to standard
coverage horizontal sidewall sprinklers
having a maximum coverage area of 10
ft. x 10 ft. (100 ft
2
) for ordi nary hazard
occupancies.
Horizontal sidewall sprinklers are de-
signed for installation along a wall or
the side of a beam and are common-
ly used instead of pendent or upright
sprinklers due to aesthetics or building
construction considerations, where pip-
ing across the ceiling is not desirable.
Corrosion resistant coatings, where
applicable, are utilized to extend the
life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond
that which would otherwise be ob-
tained when exposed to corrosive at-
mospheres. Although corrosion resis-
tant coated sprinklers have passed the
standard corrosion tests of the appli-
cable approval agencies, the testing is
not representative of all possible cor-
rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it
is recommended that the end user be
consulted with respect to the suitability
of these corrosion resistant coatings for
any given corrosive environment. The
effects of ambient temperature, con-
centration of chemicals, and gas/chemi-
cal velocity, should be con sidered, as a
minimum, along with the corrosive na-
ture of the chemical to which the sprin-
klers will be exposed.
NOTICE
The Model SW-20 and SW-24 Sprin-
klers described herein must be installed
and maintained in compliance with this
document and with the applicable stan-
dards of the National Fire Protection As-
sociation, in addition to the standards
of any authorities having jurisdiction.
Failure to do so may impair the perfor-
mance of these devices.
The owner is responsible for maintain-
ing their fire protection system and de-
vices in proper operating condition. The
installing contractor or sprinkler manu-
facturer should be contacted with any
questions.

Overview

The TYCO Model SW-20 and SW-24 are 11.2 K-factor, Extended Coverage Ordinary Hazard (ECOH) Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers, designed for use in ordinary hazard occupancies as defined by NFPA 13. These are decorative glass bulb sprinklers that operate as standard response devices.

Function Description:

These sprinklers are designed to provide fire protection in areas where piping across the ceiling is undesirable, often due to aesthetic preferences or specific building construction considerations. They are installed along a wall or the side of a beam, offering an alternative to pendent or upright sprinklers. The SW-20 model is designed to protect coverage areas up to 16 ft. x 20 ft. (320 ft²), while the SW-24 model extends protection to coverage areas up to 16 ft. x 24 ft. (384 ft²). This represents a significant increase in coverage area compared to standard coverage horizontal sidewall sprinklers, which typically cover 10 ft. x 10 ft. (100 ft²). The operation of these sprinklers relies on a glass bulb containing a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. Upon reaching the rated temperature, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, allowing water to flow and activate the fire suppression system.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • K-factor: 11.2 GPM/psi½ (161.3 LPM/bar½).
  • Maximum Working Pressure: 175 psi (12.1 bar).
  • Temperature Ratings:
    • SW-20: 155°F (68°C) & 200°F (93°C).
    • SW-24: 200°F (93°C).
  • Sprinkler Identification Numbers (SIN):
    • TY5332 for SW-20 (re-designation for C5332).
    • TY5337 for SW-24 (re-designation for C5337).
  • Approvals: UL and C-UL Listed (including as Corrosion Resistant Sprinklers when polyester coated), and NYC under MEA 177-03-E.
  • Physical Characteristics:
    • Frame: Bronze
    • Button: Bronze
    • Sealing Assembly: Beryllium Nickel with TEFLON
    • Bulb: Glass
    • Compression Screw: Brass
    • Deflector: Bronze
  • Pipe Thread Connection: 3/4 inch NPT (ISO 7-1 connections can be provided on special request).
  • Deflector-to-Ceiling Distance: 6 to 12 inches (150 to 300 mm).
  • Minimum Spacing: 8 ft. (2.4 m) for lateral distance between sprinklers along a single wall.
  • Clearance: A 36-inch (914 mm) clearance must be maintained between the top of the sprinkler deflector and any miscellaneous storage.

Usage Features:

  • Extended Coverage: Offers larger protection areas compared to standard sidewall sprinklers, reducing the number of sprinklers required for a given space.
  • Aesthetic Integration: Ideal for applications where visible ceiling piping is undesirable, making them suitable for various architectural designs.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Available with corrosion-resistant coatings (e.g., polyester) to extend the lifespan of copper alloy sprinklers in corrosive environments. However, the suitability of these coatings for specific corrosive environments should be evaluated by consulting the end user, considering factors like ambient temperature, chemical concentration, and gas/chemical velocity.
  • Sloped Ceiling Installation: Can be installed on sloped ceilings in loading docks with a maximum roof slope of 4 inches per foot (18.4°), as illustrated in Figure 4.
  • Installation Requirements: Must be installed with the centerline perpendicular to the back wall and parallel to the ceiling, with the word "TOP" on the deflector facing towards the ceiling. A leak-tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint requires a torque of 7 to 14 ft.-lbs. (9.5 to 19.0 Nm).
  • Non-Recessed Application: These sprinklers are designed for exposed applications and cannot be recessed.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: The owner is responsible for maintaining the fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition, in compliance with this document and applicable NFPA standards (e.g., NFPA 25).
  • Visual Inspections: Frequent visual inspections are recommended for corrosion-resistant coated sprinklers, especially after installation, to verify the integrity of the coating. Annual inspections per NFPA 25 are generally sufficient, but random close-up visual inspections are advised to better assess the sprinkler condition and long-term integrity of the coating.
  • Damage Prevention: Care must be exercised during handling and installation to prevent damage. Sprinklers damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or those with cracked bulbs or lost liquid must be replaced.
  • No Alterations: Sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced.
  • Cleaning: Sprinklers exposed to corrosive products of combustion that have not operated should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping with a cloth or brushing with a soft bristle brush.
  • Escutcheon Importance: The absence of an escutcheon, which covers a clearance hole, may delay sprinkler operation in a fire situation.
  • System Shutdown Procedure: Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance, permission must be obtained from proper authorities, and all affected personnel must be notified.
  • Qualified Service: Automatic sprinkler systems should be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local and national codes.
