General
Description
The Series TY-FRB, 5.6 K-factor Up-
right and Pendent Intermediate Level
Sprinklers described in this data sheet
are automatic sprinklers of the “quick
response” 3 mm frangible bulb type.
They are “standard spray” sprinklers
intended for use in fire sprinkler sys-
tems designed in accordance with the
standard installation rules recognized
by the applicable Listing or Approval
agency (e.g., UL Listing is based on
NFPA requirements). Both the Up-
right and Pendent Sprinklers produce
a hemispherical water distribution pat-
tern below the deflector.
Intermediate Level Sprinklers are pri-
marily designed for use in rack stor-
age sprinkler systems where their
thermally sensitive elements must be
shielded from the water spray of high-
er elevation sprinklers that could op-
erate earlier during a fire. Intermediate
Level Sprinklers are also used in oth-
er applications such as beneath open
gridded catwalks.
For additional Series TY-FRB Sprin-
kler information, see Technical Data
Sheet TFP172. For additional Guard
and Shield information, see Technical
Data Sheet TFP780.
NOTICE
The Series TY-FRB Sprinklers de-
scribed herein must be installed and
maintained in compliance with this
document, as well as with the appli-
cable standards of the National Fire
Protection Association, in addition to
the standards of any other authorities
having jurisdiction. Failure to do so
may impair the performance of these
devices.
The owner is responsible for maintain-
ing their fire protection system and
devices in proper operating condi-
tion. The installing contractor or sprin-
kler manufacturer should be contact-
ed with any questions.

IMPORTANT
Always refer to Technical Data
Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER
WARNING” that provides cautions
with respect to handling and instal-
lation of sprinkler systems and com-
ponents. Improper handling and in-
stallation can permanently damage
a sprinkler system or its compo-
nents and cause the sprinkler to fail
to operate in a fire situation or cause
it to operate prematurely.

Overview

The Series TY-FRB, 5.6 K-factor Upright and Pendent Intermediate Level Sprinklers are quick-response automatic sprinklers of the 3 mm frangible bulb type. These "standard spray" sprinklers are designed for use in fire sprinkler systems that comply with standard installation rules recognized by applicable Listing or Approval agencies, such as UL Listing based on NFPA requirements. Both the Upright and Pendent Sprinklers produce a hemispherical water distribution pattern below the deflector.

Intermediate Level Sprinklers are primarily intended for use in rack storage sprinkler systems where their thermally sensitive elements must be shielded from the water spray of higher elevation sprinklers that could operate earlier during a fire. They are also used in other applications, such as beneath open gridded catwalks.

Function Description

The glass bulb within the sprinkler contains a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, allowing the sprinkler to activate and water to flow, providing fire suppression.

Usage Features

  • Installation: The sprinklers must be installed in compliance with this document, applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, and any other authorities having jurisdiction.
  • General Installation Instructions:
    • Do not install if the bulb is cracked or if there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. A small air bubble (approximately 1/16 inch for 135°F to 3/32 inch for 286°F ratings) should be present when the sprinkler is held horizontally.
    • A leak-tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint requires a torque of 7 to 14 ft.-lbs. (9.5 to 19.0 Nm). Higher torque levels can distort the sprinkler inlet and cause leakage or impairment.
  • Upright Sprinkler Installation (TY313 with G1/S1 Guard with Shield):
    1. Apply pipe thread sealant and hand tighten the sprinkler into the fitting.
    2. Tighten the sprinkler using only the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench (applied to the wrench flats).
    3. Mount the Model G1/S1 Guard with Shield on the sprinkler. Spread the two halves of the Guard enough to pass by the deflector.
    4. Spread the two halves of the Sprinkler Base Plates enough to pass over the sprinkler Thread Relief portion.
    5. Position the Sprinkler Guard on the Thread Relief portion, engage the Bars with Clips from opposing Guard Halves, then slide the Clips up until they are seated against the Base Plates. The Clips must seat against the Base Plates for proper installation. The Guard Installation Tool (shipped with guards) can assist, and pliers may be used. The G1/S1 Guard with Shield can be located in any position relative to the sprinkler frame arms.
  • Pendent Sprinkler Installation (TY323 with S2 Shield and G1 Guard):
    1. Thread the S2 Shield onto the sprinkler threads with the stamped markings toward the deflector, just to the end of the threads.
    2. Roll the O-Ring over the sprinkler threads until it seats against the Shield.
    3. Apply pipe thread sealant and hand tighten the sprinkler into the fitting.
    4. Tighten the sprinkler using only the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench (applied to the wrench flats).
    5. Rotate the S2 Shield clockwise (looking up) to slightly compress the O-Ring between the Shield and sprinkler fitting. (Installation is complete if only S2 Shield is used.)
    6. If installing a G1 Guard, mount it on the sprinkler. Spread the two halves of the Sprinkler Guard enough to pass by the deflector.
    7. Spread the two halves of the Sprinkler Base Plates enough to pass over the sprinkler Thread Relief portion.
    8. Position the Sprinkler Guard on the Thread Relief portion, engage the Bars with Clips from opposing Guard Halves, then slide the Clips up until they are seated against the Base Plates. The Clips must seat against the Base Plates for proper installation. The Guard Installation Tool can assist, and pliers may be used. The G1 Guard can be located in any position relative to the sprinkler frame arms.

Maintenance Features

  • General Maintenance: Sprinklers must be maintained and serviced in accordance with this document and applicable NFPA 25 standards.
  • System Shutdown: Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance, permission must be obtained from proper authorities and all affected personnel must be notified.
  • Replacement:
    • Sprinklers found leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced.
    • Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced.
    • Sprinklers exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping or brushing with a soft bristle brush.
    • Sprinklers damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or those with a cracked bulb or lost liquid from the bulb must be replaced.
  • Inspection and Testing: The owner is responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, NFPA 25, and any other authorities having jurisdiction. It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service.
