Overview

The Vaillant ecoTEC is a compact, wall-mounted gas condensing boiler designed for efficient domestic heating and hot water preparation. This appliance is built to high safety standards and offers a range of features for user convenience and energy saving.

Function Description

The ecoTEC operates as a heat generator for closed hot-water central heating installations and for central hot water preparation. It utilizes condensing appliance technology, which means it extracts additional heat from the flue gases, making it highly efficient. The unit is designed to be connected to a domestic hot water cylinder (VIH-type) for hot water generation.

The boiler features a Digital Information and Analysis System (DIA) display that provides real-time information on its operating status. This includes the current heating flow temperature, system filling pressure, operating mode, and any status or error codes. The display uses symbols to indicate various states, such as hot water preparation active, internal pump in operation, gas valve actuation, and burner operation. In the event of a fault, an error code will appear instead of the temperature, accompanied by relevant symbols.

The ecoTEC is equipped with a pressure gauge and a digital pressure indicator to monitor the system's filling pressure. This is crucial for correct operation, with an ideal cold system pressure between 1.0 and 2.0 bar. If the pressure drops too low (below 0.6 bar, indicated by a flashing value on the display, or below 0.3 bar, triggering an F.22 error), the unit will switch off to prevent damage.

For safety, the appliance includes a frost protection system. If the heating feed temperature falls below 5°C while the main switch is on, the unit will automatically activate to heat the generation circuit to approximately 30°C, helping to prevent freezing within the boiler.

The ecoTEC can be controlled either directly via its integrated rotary knobs or through various external controllers and weather compensators provided by Vaillant. These accessories allow for precise temperature regulation, timer programming, and optimized energy consumption based on external weather conditions or room temperature.

Usage Features

Operating the ecoTEC involves several user-friendly features. The main switch allows for easy power on/off. Once switched on, the display shows the current heating feed temperature.

For hot water preparation, users can set the desired storage temperature using a dedicated rotary knob. The display will show the nominal value for a few seconds before reverting to the standard display. It's important to note that for solar-supported drinking water heating installations, the hot water outlet temperature should be set to at least 60°C to prevent Legionella formation. In areas with hard water (above 3.57 mol/m³ or 20 °dH), it is advised not to turn the rotary knob beyond the middle position to minimize calcification. The hot water generation can be deactivated by turning the rotary knob all the way to the left, leaving only the frost protection active for the cylinder.

For heating mode, the flow temperature can be set using another rotary knob. If no external controller is connected, recommended settings vary based on outside temperature (e.g., left position for spring/autumn, mid-position for reasonably cold weather, right position for very cold weather). If a room thermostat or weather compensator is connected, the heating feed temperature rotary knob should be turned all the way to the right, as the controller will automatically adjust the flow temperature. Heating mode can be switched off for summer operation by turning this knob all the way to the left, without affecting hot water supply.

The display also features "+" and "-" buttons for navigating through display views, which can be used by expert technicians for settings and troubleshooting, or by users to display storage temperature or filling pressure. A "Fault resolution" button is available to reset the system in case of specific faults, such as ignition failures (F.28 or F.29 error codes).

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the ecoTEC's operational safety, reliability, and long working life, as well as maximizing its efficiency. Vaillant recommends annual inspection and maintenance by an expert technician or Vaillant Service Solutions.

Users are advised to regularly check the heating system's filling pressure using the pressure gauge or digital display. If the pressure is too low, the system needs to be topped up with water. The manual provides detailed instructions on how to fill the system, including opening radiator valves, connecting a hose to the filling tap, slowly opening the filling cock, and bleeding radiators. It emphasizes using only clean tap water for filling and strictly prohibits the addition of chemicals like frost or corrosion prevention materials, as these can damage seals and diaphragms and void the warranty.

For cleaning, the appliance's cladding can be wiped with a damp cloth and a little soap. Harsh scouring agents, solvents, chlorinated cleaning agents, paint, adhesives, or similar substances should not be used near the appliance, as they can cause corrosion, even in the flue system.

In case of a gas smell, users are instructed to immediately open windows, avoid naked flames or electrical switches, close the gas isolator cock on the unit and the main gas meter, warn others without ringing doorbells, evacuate the building, and contact the gas supply company from outside.

The manual also highlights the importance of not tampering with safety devices or attempting any modifications to the unit, its supply pipes, or flue gas pipes. Any alterations should only be carried out by a suitably qualified heating engineer.

For longer periods of shutdown, such as holidays, the gas stop-cock and cold water stop-cock should be switched off, in addition to turning off the main switch. The frost protection system within the boiler is active only when the main switch is in the "I" position and the unit is connected to the power mains. For comprehensive frost protection of the entire heating system, draining the system and appliance completely is an alternative, which should be performed by a heating engineer.
