Important information on wheels and tyres
The Commission shall ensure that the vehicle is not
under the control of the vehicle and that injuries
occur.
serious diseases.
•
Tyres shall be replaced with new tyres when
the wear indicator mark is reached at the
latest.
•
Worn tyres lose grip considerably, especially
when the road surface is wet, and the vehicle
is not able to grip the tyres.
"skids more easily (aquaplaning).
•
When tyres are worn, the possibility of good
control of the vehicle in normal and difficult
driving situations is reduced.
This increases braking distance and the risk of
skidding.
If the vehicle vibrates unusually or tends to pull to
one side while driving, a tyre may be damaged.
•
Reduce speed immediately and stop the vehicle
in accordance with the rules of the road.
•
Check tyres and rims for damage.
•
Never continue driving if the tyres or rims are
damaged. In this case, seek the assistance of
qualified personnel.
•
If there is no visible damage, drive slowly and
cautiously to the nearest specialist workshop
and ask for the vehicle to be checked.

Tyre damage
Please note at the beginning of this chapter
on
page 259.
Tyre and rim damage cannot be seen with the
naked eye → .
—
If you suspect that a wheel is damaged,
immediately reduce speed and stop the vehicle
as soon as the traffic situation permits and it is
safe to do so.
—
Check tyres and rims for damage.
—
If a tyre is damaged, do not continue driving.
—
Replace the damaged wheel → p. 272. If
necessary, have qualified personnel help you to
do this.
OR: Seal the damaged wheel with the puncture
repair kit and inflate it → p. 280.
—
If there is no visible damage, drive slowly and
carefully to the nearest specialist workshop and
ask for the vehicle to be checked.
Foreign bodies introduced into the tyre
—
Do not remove foreign objects stuck in the tyre
if they have penetrated the tyre! Objects that
have become trapped between the tread blocks
can be removed.
—
Replace the damaged wheel → p. 272. If
necessary, have qualified personnel help you to
do this.
OR: Seal the damaged wheel with the puncture
repair kit and inflate it → p. 280.
—
Check and adjust the tyre pressure.
—
Visit a specialist workshop. Volkswagen
recommends that you visit a Volkswagen dealer
for this.
—
If the vehicle is fitted with puncture-proof tyres,
leave the foreign matter in the tyre and visit a
specialist workshop. A sealing compound inside
the tyre tread surrounds the foreign body and
seals the tyre temporarily.
Tyre wear
Tyre wear depends on several factors:
—
the driving style
—
wheel balancing
—
the adjustment of the running gear
Fast cornering, accelerating, etc.
and braking increase tyre wear.
During driving, an imbalance can occur, which is
manifested by vibration of the steering wheel.
Wheel imbalance also has an effect on tyre wear.
Therefore, in such cases, a new wheel balancing
must be ordered.
Incorrect chassis settings impair driving safety and
increase tyre wear. In the event of increased tyre
wear, have the chassis checked by a specialist
workshop.
