Keel cooling
The keel cooling system of the TAMD73 consists of
two separate, closed freshwater systems with cooling
loops which cool the engine by contact with the sea
water.
The keel cooling which replaces the heat exchanger
function has a separate circulation pump and expansi-
on tank for each circuit.
In circuit 1, the sea water pump is used as a circula-
tion pump and cools the charge air and the reverse
gear oil cooler.
In circuit 2, the coolant circulates using the engine
usual coolant pump and cools the engine, turbochar-
ger (TC) and engine oil cooler.

Heat exchanger and charge air
cooler (CAC)
TAMD73 is equipped with a heat exchanger and a
charge air cooler (CAC). The coolers are installed on
the right of the engine, the heat exchanger(s) at the
front.
Heat from the engine’s inner cooling circuit (the fres-
hwater system) is transferred in the heat exchanger to
the outer cooling circuit (the seawater).
The charge air cooler (CAC) transfers heat from the
charge air from the turbocharger to the seawater.
The cooler units are an aluminum housing with a tubu-
lar cooling insert.
The seawater passes through the pipes, while the
freshwater (heat exchanger) or charge air (for CAC)
passes between the pipes.
