Overview

The Welch Allyn CareTemp™ Touch Free Thermometer is a clinical-grade device designed for the intermittent measurement of human body temperature in patients of all ages within a professional-use environment. This thermometer offers a non-contact method for temperature measurement, enhancing hygiene and reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

Function Description

The primary function of the CareTemp™ Touch Free Thermometer is to accurately measure human body temperature without physical contact. It utilizes an infrared sensor to detect temperature, providing a quick and efficient reading. The device is intended for professional use, ensuring reliability and precision in clinical settings.

Usage Features

Power On and Ready State: To power on the thermometer, press the "Measure" button. Once ready, a single dash will appear on the screen, accompanied by an audible beep, indicating the device is prepared for a measurement.

Taking a Measurement: For an accurate reading, position the thermometer between 4 and 6 cm from the center of the patient's forehead, aiming between the eyebrows. After pressing the "Measure" button, slowly move the device toward or farther from the forehead. An arrow on the display will flash, guiding the user to the correct distance. Once the optimal distance is achieved, the LED bar will illuminate, three beeps will sound, and the temperature measurement will be displayed. The thermometer allows 20 seconds to capture a measurement after the "Measure" button is pressed. If the measurement is not completed within this timeframe, the device will display "Err ↑," and the process can be restarted by pressing "Measure" again. The measurement or error message will display for 3 seconds before the thermometer returns to its ready state.

Important Considerations for Measurement Accuracy:

  • Ensure both the patient and the thermometer are in the same environmental conditions for at least 30 minutes prior to measurement.
  • Avoid taking temperature measurements for at least 30 minutes after physical activity, bathing, swimming, consuming food or beverages, or spending time outdoors.
  • Wait at least 1 minute between temperature measurements to prevent incorrect readings due to frequent use.
  • If the eyebrow area is covered with hair, sweat, or dirt, clean the area and wait 10 minutes before taking a measurement.
  • Hold the thermometer and the patient's forehead steady during measurement, as movement can impact accuracy.
  • Avoid pointing the infrared sensor at any heat source other than a patient, as this can affect measurements.
  • Measurements should ideally be taken by pointing the infrared sensor at the same area of the forehead. Temperatures measured at different locations on the temples or opposite sides of the head can vary considerably.
  • Holding the thermometer in your hands for too long or exposing it to external heat sources can distort readings, making the body temperature appear higher or lower than the actual value.

Automatic Shut-off: The thermometer automatically turns off after 10 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life.

Recalling a Measurement: The device stores the last temperature taken in its memory. To recall this reading, press and release the "MEM" button. The LCD will display the stored temperature for 10 seconds, accompanied by a "MEM" indicator. To manually move the current measurement to memory and clear the display for a new reading, press and hold the "MEM" button for 3 seconds. Three beeps will confirm that the measurement has been moved to memory. Note that a new reading will automatically move to memory when the thermometer turns off or a new measurement is initiated.

Using the Timer: The thermometer includes a pulse timer function. Press and release the "Timer" button to activate it. Audible beeps will sound at 0, 15, 45, and 60 seconds. To exit the timer at any point, press the "Timer" button again. After a full 60-second cycle, the thermometer will automatically turn off after 2 seconds.

Changing the Temperature Scale (Celsius/Fahrenheit): To temporarily view a measurement in the alternate temperature scale, press the "C/F" button. This feature allows continuous toggling between Celsius and Fahrenheit. To change the default temperature scale, press and hold both the "MEM" and "C/F" buttons for 3 seconds. Three beeps will confirm the change. The alternate scale will remain active until the "C/F" button is pressed again, a new measurement is taken, any other action is performed, or the thermometer turns off, at which point it will revert to the default scale.

Maintenance Features

Battery Replacement: The thermometer operates on two AAA (LR03) batteries. A flashing battery symbol on the display indicates low battery power, signaling the need for replacement.

  1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the battery cover screw.
  2. Slide open the battery cover and remove the old batteries.
  3. Insert two new AAA (LR03) alkaline batteries, ensuring correct alignment as indicated inside the battery compartment.
  4. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw. It is recommended to remove the batteries if the thermometer will not be used for an extended period (e.g., multiple months) to prevent damage from leaking batteries. If a battery has leaked, wear protective gloves and clean the compartment with a dry cloth. Do not use rechargeable batteries, as they may compromise device performance.

Cleaning and Disinfecting the Thermometer: The thermometer can be cleaned and disinfected to an intermediate level.

  • General Cleaning: Use a pre-moistened wipe or a soft cloth slightly moistened with an approved cleaner to gently clean the thermometer.
  • Disinfection: Use a pre-moistened wipe or a soft cloth slightly moistened with an approved disinfectant. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the disinfectant.
  • Post-Cleaning/Disinfection: After cleaning or disinfecting, wait at least 10 minutes before taking another measurement.

Approved Cleaning Agents: Only the following approved cleaning agents should be used: CaviWipes, Sani-Cloth® Plus, Super Sani-Cloth®, Sani-Cloth® Bleach, Oxiver Tb, Clinell Universal Wipes, Accel INTERVention, Accel TB, Super HDQ® L10, Cleancide, Clorox HealthCare Bleach Germicidal Cleaner, Virex II (256), Tuffie5 Cleaning Wipes, 70% IPA, and 10% bleach (.5% - 1% Sodium Hypochlorite), Desko. Contact Welch Allyn if your cleaning agent is not listed to confirm compatibility.

Cleaning the Sensor Window: To clean the infrared sensor lens, slightly moisten a cotton swab or cloth with isopropyl or ethyl alcohol and gently wipe the surface of the lens using a side-to-side (not circular) motion. Avoid touching the lens directly with fingers except when cleaning is necessary.

Important Cautions for Cleaning:

  • Never submerge the thermometer in water or any other liquid.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaning agents, thinners, or benzene.
  • Never insert a sharp object into the scanner area or any other open surface.
  • Do not use unapproved cleaning or disinfection agents, as they may damage components.
  • Only use isopropyl or ethyl alcohol on the lens.
  • The thermometer is NOT waterproof.
  • Do not autoclave the device.

Calibration Testing: The thermometer is calibrated at the time of manufacture and does not require periodic readjustment if operating according to instructions. However, users must comply with all legal requirements for controlling the measurement, functionality, and accuracy of the device in their specific region.

Disposal: The thermometer contains no hazardous materials and should be discarded without environmental risk. Remove the batteries before disposal. Dispose of empty batteries in accordance with national or local regulations.
