Overview

The WEN CM1452 14-Inch Chop Saw is a robust power tool engineered for efficiently cutting through various metals and other materials. Its primary function is to provide quick and easy straight or angled cuts, making it a valuable asset for workshops and construction sites. The saw is designed with user safety and operational ease in mind, featuring several mechanisms to ensure secure and precise cutting.

For operation, the chop saw incorporates an operating handle and a blade trigger with a lock button. To initiate a cut, the saw arm must first be raised from its lower, locked position. This involves lightly pressing down on the operating handle and pulling out the release knob, then slowly raising the arm to the upper position. The release knob pin is then set into a shallow groove to unlock the cutting head, allowing for free movement. Once the saw arm is in position, the blade trigger lock button is pressed with the thumb, and the power trigger is squeezed to turn the saw ON. A safety feature prevents accidental starting by requiring the trigger lock to be engaged before the power trigger can be pressed. It is crucial to allow the blade to reach full speed before slowly lowering it into the workpiece, ensuring safer and cleaner cuts. After the cut is complete, the blade should be allowed to raise to its upright position, and the power trigger released. The blade must come to a complete stop before removing the workpiece.

The chop saw is equipped with a rear vise fence that can be adjusted to accommodate different workpiece sizes and cutting angles, ranging from 0° to 45°. To change the angle, the spring-loaded locking handle securing the fence to the base is loosened, the fence is turned to the desired angle, and then the locking handle and an M10 bolt are tightened to secure it. For repositioning the fence, the M10 bolt and spring-loaded locking handle are removed, the fence is moved to a suitable position, and then the fasteners are replaced and tightened. A quick-release vise mechanism further enhances convenience, allowing for rapid repositioning of the vise jaw to secure the workpiece. This mechanism is engaged by lifting it, sliding the vise jaw to the desired position, and then pushing the mechanism down to fully engage with the vise screw, followed by tightening the vise.

The cutting depth of the saw can also be adjusted for kerfing or rabbet cuts that do not go all the way through the workpiece. This adjustment is made by locating the depth stop screw on the left side of the saw, loosening the depth stop nut, and turning the depth stop bolt clockwise to increase depth or counterclockwise to decrease it. After adjustment, the nut is tightened, and a test cut on scrap material is recommended to verify the setting.

The saw comes with a V-vise attachment, which slides over the vise jaw, providing a better grip for round stock or square tubes, ensuring proper cutting alignment. This feature is particularly useful for safely cutting a wide range of materials.

Maintenance features are integrated to ensure the longevity and performance of the tool. The saw includes a 1-1/2 inch dust port and a dust tray, which should be checked and emptied regularly to prevent accumulation and maintain a clean working environment. It is recommended that the tray never be more than 60% full, and a dust mask should be worn when handling the dust tray contents.

Blade changes are a critical maintenance task, and the manual provides clear instructions for this. Before any blade change, the tool must be unplugged. The blade cover screw is loosened, and the cover plate rotated to reveal the arbor bolt and outer flange. The arbor is locked by pushing down on the arbor lock, and an 8mm hex wrench is used to loosen and remove the arbor screw, washer, and outer flange. The blade guard is then rotated and retracted, and the old blade carefully removed. For installation, a new blade is placed on the inner flange and arbor, ensuring the blade direction matches the indication on the housing. The arbor is locked, and the outer flange, washer, and arbor bolt are reassembled and tightened clockwise with the hex wrench. After releasing the arbor lock and gently turning the blade to ensure disengagement, the arbor cover is rotated into place and secured with the cross head screw. Finally, the saw should be plunged a few times without power to confirm proper blade guard operation and installation. Running the saw for a few minutes after a new blade is installed, without cutting material, helps ensure correct installation and identify any blade flaws.

Routine inspections are crucial for maintaining the tool's condition. Before each use, the saw should be checked for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, damaged cords or electrical wiring, cracked or broken parts, and any other condition that might affect safe operation. Any identified issues should be addressed before using the tool.

The carbon brushes, which are essential for motor function, are replaceable. To access them, the carbon brush cap is removed with a flat-head screwdriver, the old brushes are carefully removed, and new ones are installed. Both carbon brushes should be replaced simultaneously. New carbon brushes may spark for a few minutes during initial use as they wear in.

For storage, the tool should be kept in a clean, dry place, away from children, and at temperatures between 41° to 86°F. Covering the miter saw is recommended to protect it from dust and moisture.

Troubleshooting guidance is provided for common issues such as ineffective cutting performance, excessive noise or vibration, the blade not turning, and the motor not starting. Solutions range from sharpening or replacing the blade, cleaning surfaces, ensuring proper blade installation and security, checking power connections, to replacing carbon brushes or contacting customer service for more complex problems. Overheating issues are addressed by ensuring the workpiece is compatible with the blade, using an appropriately sized extension cord, and clearing blocked motor housing vents.

Overall, the WEN CM1452 14-Inch Chop Saw is designed for efficient and safe metal cutting, with user-friendly adjustments and clear maintenance guidelines to ensure reliable performance over time.
