Overview

This document is a Use and Care Guide for a Whirlpool® Washer, providing instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The Whirlpool Washer is designed for cleaning laundry using High Efficiency (HE) detergents. It offers various wash cycles tailored for different fabric types and soil levels, including Normal, Delicate, Heavy Duty, Rinse, Spin, and Clean Washer. The washer features a top-loading design with dispensers for liquid fabric softener, powdered HE detergent, and liquid chlorine bleach. It can be installed permanently or as a portable unit, draining into a standpipe, laundry tub, or sink. The washer includes a Lid Lock safety feature, preventing the lid from opening during operation, and a Control Lock to prevent accidental changes to settings.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Requirements: 120 V, 60 Hz, AC only, 15 or 20 A fused electrical supply. A time-delay fuse or circuit breaker is recommended, and a separate circuit is preferred. The washer is equipped with a 3-prong grounding plug.
  • Water Supply: Hot and cold water faucets located within 3.5 ft (1.1 m) of the fill valves, with water pressure of 5-100 psi (34.5-690 kPa). A water heater set to deliver 120°F (49°C) water to the washer is needed. Inlet hoses should be replaced every 5 years.
  • Drain System:
    • Standpipe Drain: Minimum 2" (50 mm) diameter, 17 gal. (64.5 L) per minute carry-away capacity. Top of standpipe must be 39" (990 mm) to 72" (183 cm) from the bottom of the washer.
    • Laundry Tub Drain: Minimum 17 gal. (64.5 L) per minute carry-away capacity. Top of laundry tub must be 39" (990 mm) to 72" (183 cm) from the bottom of the washer.
    • Portable Installation Drain: Drains into a sink or laundry tub with a 17 gal. (64.5 L) per minute carry-away capacity. Top of tub must be 27" (686 mm) to 48" (121.9 cm) from the bottom of the washer.
  • Dimensions (Washer Only): 21" (533 mm) width, 23" (584 mm) depth, 37" (940 mm) height (minimum with leveling feet installed).
  • Load Capacity: Maximum volume of about 1.52 cubic ft. (4.4 lb max. load size per cubic ft.).
  • Floor Requirements: Level floor with a maximum slope of 3/4" (1.9 cm) under the entire washer. Not recommended for carpeting. Sturdy floor to support 225 lbs (102 kg) (washer, water, and load).
  • Temperature Operating Range: Do not store or operate in temperatures at or below 32°F (0°C).

Usage Features:

  • Control Panel: Features an LED Time/Status Display showing remaining cycle time, Lid Lock indicator, and cycle status. Buttons include START/PAUSE, CYCLES (Normal, Delicate, Heavy Duty, Rinse, Spin, Clean Washer), TEMP (Cool, Cold, Hot, Tap Cold, Warm), CYCLE TIME (+ or - for duration adjustment), and POWER ON/OFF.
  • Cycle Selection: Users can select from various wash cycles based on fabric type and soil level. The guide emphasizes reading garment care labels.
  • Temperature Selection: Wash temperatures can be selected (Hot, Warm, Cool, Cold, Tap Cold). For portable installations, water temperature is adjusted at the faucet, while for permanent installations, the TEMP button controls it.
  • Detergent Use: Exclusively designed for HE High Efficiency detergents. Non-HE detergents can lead to excessive sudsing, longer cycle times, reduced rinsing, and potential component failure or mold/mildew buildup.
  • Dispensers: Dedicated dispensers for liquid fabric softener, powdered HE detergent, and liquid chlorine bleach ensure proper dispensing at optimal times during the cycle. Liquid HE detergent or single-dose packets should be added directly to the basket.
  • Loading: Items should be loaded in loose heaps evenly around the washplate, mixing different-sized items to reduce tangling and allow free movement for best cleaning.
  • Adding Items: The lid can be unlocked during a cycle by pressing START/PAUSE, allowing for the addition of missed items.
  • End-of-Cycle Signal: Can be enabled or disabled by pressing and holding the minus (-) button for 3 seconds.
  • Control Lock: Prevents accidental changes to settings by pressing and holding TEMP for 3 seconds.

Maintenance Features:

  • Water Inlet Hoses: Replace every 5 years to reduce the risk of failure. Inspect periodically for bulges, kinks, cuts, wear, or leaks.
  • Cleaning the Washer:
    • Clean Washer Cycle: Recommended every 30 washes or monthly to keep the washer fresh and clean. Uses higher water levels with a washer cleaner tablet or liquid chlorine bleach. No garments or other items should be in the washer during this cycle.
    • Chlorine Bleach Procedure (Alternative): Add 1 cup (236 mL) of liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach compartment and run the Clean Washer cycle.
    • Dispensers: Wipe with a damp cloth and towel dry to remove residue. Do not attempt to remove dispensers or trim. If applicable, remove and clean the dispenser drawer.
    • Outside of Washer: Wipe with a soft, damp cloth or sponge using mild soaps or cleaners. Avoid abrasive products.
    • Lint Filter: Clean after every load by pressing down and out to remove, opening, cleaning with water, and reinserting bottom first.
  • Non-use and Vacation Care: Unplug or disconnect power, turn off water supply, and clean dispensers.
  • Winter Storage Care: To prevent damage from freezing, install and store the washer where it will not freeze. If moving or storing in freezing weather, winterize by shutting off water faucets, disconnecting and draining inlet hoses, adding 1 qt. (1 L) of R.V.-type antifreeze to the drum, running a Normal cycle for 2 minutes, and unplugging the washer.
  • Transporting the Washer: Shut off water faucets, disconnect and drain inlet hoses and drain hose, unplug power cord, and place hoses inside the drum. Bundle the power cord.
  • Reinstalling/Using Washer Again: After non-use, vacation, winter storage, or moving, refer to installation instructions. Flush water pipes and hoses, reconnect inlet hoses, turn on faucets, plug in power, and run a Heavy Duty cycle with half the recommended amount of HE detergent to clean the washer and remove antifreeze.
