Why Woodward Control Unit unstable or won't accept full load?
    • M
      mgomezSep 17, 2025
To stabilize a Woodward Control Unit that's unstable or won't accept a full load, verify that the mechanical speed setting of the EGB governor/actuator is above the set electronic speed reference at full load. Mechanical droop can cause the speed setting of the ballhead governor to be below the electronic speed setting at full load.

Why does my Woodward Control Unit prime mover overspeed only on starts?
    • J
      John Neal DDSAug 26, 2025
If your prime mover overspeeds only when starting, try increasing the RAMP TIME clockwise. This adjustment can help control the acceleration during startup.

What should I do if there is no actuator voltage at terminals 20 and 21 on my Woodward Control Unit?
    • L
      Lori ArmstrongAug 27, 2025
If you find no actuator voltage at terminals 20 and 21, check for shorted or grounded actuator leads by disconnecting the wires from these terminals.

How to adjust the GAIN on my Woodward Control Unit for stable response?
    • M
      Matthew McdonaldAug 27, 2025
To adjust the GAIN for the fastest stable response, slowly adjust the GAIN. Making the GAIN adjustment too quickly can cause issues, so proceed gradually.

How to stabilize speed of Woodward Control Unit at rated no-load?
    • R
      robinallenSep 18, 2025
If a Woodward Control Unit's prime mover will not stabilize at rated no-load speed, adjust GAIN, RESET, and ACTUATOR COMPENSATION as described in 'Adjust for Stable Operation' and 'Dynamic Adjustment'. Ensure that the correct dynamics are selected. If adjustment of external speed trim causes instability, check the potentiometer with an ohmmeter for erratic behavior with the power off. Use non-lubricating electrical cleaner if necessary. If the internal potentiometer is faulty, replace the control. Make sure the actuator moves about 2/3 of its travel from no load to full load, and ensure the linkage provides a proportional change in power for every change in actuator terminal-shaft position. Also, ensure that necessary wires are properly shielded.

What to do if Woodward 2301A engine will not stabilize at rated no-load speed?
    • L
      Lisa GibbsNov 23, 2025
If the engine won't stabilize at the rated no-load speed, and the instability occurs at no load or varies with the load, or if the control seems erratic, consider the following: * **2301A Control:** Adjust GAIN, RESET, and ACTUATOR COMPENSATION as described in Chapter 3. * **Speed Setting Controls:** If adjusting the external speed trim causes instability, check the potentiometer with an ohmmeter for erratic behavior (turn the power off first). If necessary, use a non-lubricating electrical cleaner. If the internal speed pot is faulty, the control may need replacement. * **Improper Linkage Adjustment:** Ensure the actuator moves approximately 2/3 of its travel from no load to full load. Confirm that the linkage is linear on turbine, diesel, and fuel-injected engines, but nonlinear o...

Why won't my Woodward Controller prime mover start, and the actuator isn't moving to the start-fuel position?
    • K
      Kimberly LeblancSep 12, 2025
There could be several reasons why the prime mover isn't starting. It could be due to reversed DC supply voltage polarity, insufficient supply voltage, or a generally low supply voltage. Ensure the supply voltage is within the limits specified on the control name tag and correct the polarity if necessary. Alternatively, the start fuel limit might be set too low; try turning the start fuel limit clockwise until the prime mover starts. Another possible cause is that terminals 11 and 12 are open, verify that terminals 11 and 12 are jumpered if optional external speed trim is not used.

What to do if my Woodward Controller prime mover overspeeds only on starts?
    • J
      Jessica PowellSep 12, 2025
If your prime mover overspeeds only when starting, this could be due to several factors. The ramp adjustment might be off; try increasing the RAMP TIME clockwise to decrease the acceleration rate from low idle to rated speed. Alternatively, the RATED SPEED setting could be too high; set the RATED SPEED as described in Chapter 3. In some cases, the engine itself might be malfunctioning, so verify that the fuel rack isn't binding and the linkage is properly adjusted.

What to do if the common + source is connected to the wrong terminal on my Woodward Control Unit?
    • J
      Jennifer FlowersSep 3, 2025
If the common + source for contacts connected to terminals 14, 17, 18, and 19 is taken from terminal 16 instead of terminal 0, connect the + source for these terminals to terminal 0, not 16.

What to do if the speed sensor signal isn't clearing the failed speed signal circuit on my Woodward Control Unit?
    • B
      Barbara SkinnerSep 1, 2025
If the speed sensor signal isn't clearing the failed speed signal circuit, check the wiring for a proper connection.
