How to fix a Woodward Controller turbine that cannot obtain rated speed?
    • T
      Tracy MooreAug 12, 2025
If your Woodward Controller turbine cannot obtain rated speed, check the linkage to ensure correct terminal shaft linkage travel. The recommended travel is 2/3 of the maximum actuator shaft travel from no load to full load.

If your Woodward Controller's actuator isn't starting or controlling, it could be due to a few reasons. First, check the turbine drive to the actuator to ensure it has the correct actuator drive rotation; reverse pump parts if needed for the opposite direction of rotation. Next, verify that the key is properly installed or not missing, ensuring the drive shaft is engaged by removing the actuator and properly installing a No. 5 Woodruff key into the actuator drive. Finally, check the electric control output for the correct voltage and polarity, and adjust as necessary.

Why is my Woodward Controller turbine hunting or surging?

      Tiffany RoweSep 2, 2025
If your Woodward Controller turbine is hunting or surging, there are several possible causes. Start by checking the oil level and adding oil until it is visible in the oil sight glass. If the oil is dirty, clean and back-flush the cover filter using fuel oil or kerosene, and then change the oil. Lastly, inspect the terminal shaft linkage for any binding and align the linkage as needed.

What to do if my Woodward Controller actuator has difficulty accepting load?

If your Woodward Controller's actuator struggles to accept load or exhibits instability, indicated by slow and unsteady oscillation, particularly after a load change, it could be due to several reasons. First, check the linkage and readjust it to ensure sufficient use of terminal shaft travel; it's recommended that the travel should be about 2/3 of the maximum actuator shaft travel from no load to full load. Secondly, verify that the steam valve isn't excessively large for the application. Lastly, dirt in the actuator can also cause this issue; in that case, drain, flush, and refill the actuator with fresh oil, and clean the cover filter.
