The WOUXUN KG-UV9PX is an advanced HAM two-way radio transceiver and scanner, designed for personal hobby, EmComm, and SHTF (Survival, Hobbies, Training, and Fun) communications and scanning. It builds upon the trusted performance and design of the KG-UV9D (Plus) and KG-UV9P amateur radios, offering enhanced commercial-grade capabilities.
The KG-UV9PX operates on ARS (Amateur Radio Service) frequencies, requiring an FCC license for transmission. It supports dual-band FM operation and includes a 7-band RX with AM AIR Band reception. The device features 999 memory channels, allowing for extensive storage of frequencies and settings. It offers three power levels: Low (2 Watts), Mid (5 Watts), and High (8+ Watts), providing flexibility for various communication needs.
The radio supports both simplex and repeater-capable operations, including cross-band repeater functionality. It incorporates duplex operation and offers three scan modes: TO (Timer Scan), CO (Carrier Scan), and SE (Search Scan). Dual simultaneous channel and VFO/frequency scanning are available, along with single and dual-watch modes. The device includes VOX (Voice-Operated Transmit) for hands-free operation, and Repeater Reverse & Talk-Around (simplex) functions. CTCSS/DCS search/scanning is supported, along with 155 split CTCSS/DCS PL tones/codes. A sub-receiver muting feature is also included.
For identification, the KG-UV9PX supports ANI PTT-ID. It has a Time-Out-Timer with alert to prevent accidental long transmissions and a Battery Saver feature to extend battery life. The radio also includes a Stopwatch function.
The KG-UV9PX offers a user-friendly interface with several display modes and navigation options. It features three dark color display modes (Covert, Day 1, Day 2) in addition to the classic blue-white background, allowing users to choose a visual setting suitable for different environments and light conditions. The backlight level is adjustable from 01 to 05 for minimal light output, especially useful with the Covert setting.
Navigation is facilitated by a Channel Knob and ▲▼ keys for scrolling through channels, frequencies, or menu functions/values. The MENU key provides access to radio functions and settings, allowing users to edit and save changes. The EXIT key is used to exit the menu, cancel scanning, or as a backspace key for frequency input.
A Priority Channel Quick-Jump feature allows instant switching to a designated priority channel on the A receiver, even during scanning. This is useful for accessing home repeaters, EmComm, CALL Channels, NOAA WX, or local Public Safety channels.
The radio supports various keypad shortcuts for quick access to functions. The BAND SP key toggles the active MAIN receiver and, with a long press, activates the Priority Channel Quick-Jump. The TDRV/M key cycles through four display modes: NAME (Alpha-8 Name), FREQ-VFO (Variable Frequency Oscillator), CH (Channel Number), and CHFREQ (Frequency + Channel Number). The *-SCAN key initiates repeater reverse or starts scan mode, while the #-LOCK key manages IN FRQ/SAVE/CALL (FM Radio) and locks the device. The ▲▼ keys also control next/previous channel, function, value, and scan direction. The RPT SP key changes the band in VFO mode and, with a long press, activates Talk-Around/Direct (simplex) mode.
For transmitting, users select the desired channel or frequency, confirm it's not in use with SP PF3 Monitor, and then press and hold the PTT key while speaking at a normal, consistent volume. The radio supports TX CTCSS codes or DCS tones for accessing repeaters or communicating with other stations. A ROGER BEEP (tone) can be set to transmit at the beginning or end of a transmission. The Busy Channel Lockout (BCL) feature inhibits accidental transmission when an active signal is detected.
The Commercial FM Radio feature tunes from 76 to 108 MHz in 100 kHz steps, offering an IN FRQ VFO Mode with SE Scanning, Memory SAVE, and Memory CALL functions with 20 dedicated memories. When the FM Radio is active, the MAIN & Sub-Receiver will monitor for active signals and mute the FM Radio audio, resuming playback when the signal ceases.
Programming can be done via computer using the free WOUXUN Customer Programming Software (CPS) and a USB Programming Cable. The radio also comes pre-programmed with over 850 channels, including HAM FM Calls, simplex frequencies, NOAA Weather stations, GMRS/FRS, MURS, MMS (Marine), AIR (Aviation), AAR (Railroads), and various federal emergency and agency frequencies.
The KG-UV9PX includes a Battery Voltage Meter to monitor battery charge. The device is designed with stiff knobs, featuring additional washers to provide more resistance and prevent accidental changes to channel and volume settings.
The radio has an Emergency RESET function (Menu 61_RESET | ALL) that restores it to a default 29-channel HAM + NOAA configuration. This allows users to easily revert to a known working state if settings become problematic.
For optimal battery life, it is recommended to remove the battery from the radio if storing it for more than one month, ensuring it is at approximately 60% charge. Users are advised to avoid operating the radio (and never transmit) while it is in the charger to prevent damage. The device should not be submerged or intentionally soaked in any liquid or gel.
The KG-UV9PX is FCC Part 15B Certified and Part 97 Compliant, ensuring it meets regulatory standards. Users are cautioned against transmitting without an antenna attached, with a damaged antenna, while touching the antenna, around explosives, or while refueling a vehicle. It should only be operated with batteries and chargers designed for this radio.
