SPECIAL APPLICATION
Xtralis VESDA detectors may be optionally configured for use in special application environments with higher Fire
Alarm sensitivity that is, by default not allowed by the ANSI UL 268 Ed7 standard.
Special application mode is suitable for areas where early warning is paramount, in this mode, the detector may not
be compliant with the Nuisance requirement of UL 268 Ed7 standard.
Detectors configured for special applications are not suitable for use in areas where cooking appliances can be
used.
If it is possible that cooking appliances can be used within the protected space, the detector configuration should be
reverted back to open area mode with the respective alarm threshold settings derived from the Aspire design tool
and applied to the detector configuration.
Note: Special application configurations are not for general use and the detector may be prone to false alarms
if used in unsuitable environments.
While no list is all-inclusive, some examples of unsuitable environments include:
l Areas with airborne particulate or aerosols including:
o
Sawing
o
Drilling
o
Grinding
o
Textile
o
Agricultural processing,
l Areas with engines that are not vented to the outside.
l A list of common aerosol and particulate sources is available in the applicable Annex of NFPA 72.
Environments suitable for special application use may include early warning for:
l Hospitals
l Museums
l Assisted living
l Data centers
l Areas that do not have airborne particulate or aerosols.
