Check the fuse for the electric start circuit and replace it with one of the correct amperage if it's blown, after checking for the cause of the electric overload. Ensure the shift lever is in neutral. If these steps don't resolve the issue, the starter components may be faulty and require servicing by a Yamaha dealer.

Also, make sure the spark plug caps are correctly fitted and that the engine stop switch lanyard is attached. Poor connections or damaged ignition wiring can also be a cause; check wires for wear or breaks, tighten all loose connections, and replace worn or broken wires.
