Starter Motor Troubleshooting
STARTER MOTOR TROUBLESHOOTING
Is the shift lever at
NEUTRAL position?
Does engine crank?
Engine does not stop
even when key switch is
turned OFF.
Is battery fully charged
and terminals clean?
Is revolution normal?
Engine does not start?

Inspect fuel system.
Inspect condition of engine.
Move shift lever to
NEUTRAL position.
Pinion roller clutch or
reduction gear damaged.
Inspect and replace.
• Charge or replace battery.
• Clean terminals.
• Inspect brush and replace if worn.
• If brushes are not worn, replace armature
assembly.
Inspect wiring up to solenoid switch
and repair if necessary.
• Key switch
• Safety relay
• Solenoid switch assembly
• Electrical connections
• Adjust / pinion projection length.
• Inspect shift lever for deformation,
return spring for fatigue and pinion
for sliding.
• Repair meshing between pinion and
ring gear or replace as needed.
Replace engine oil.
Repair or replace
starter motor.
Solenoid switch assembly
contact defective. Repair
or replace.
Repair or replace key switch, starting
motor relay or magnetic switch assembly.
If a problem occurs:
Immediately disconnect battery negative terminal.
If starter motor becomes wet, replace solenoid switch
assembly even if function is normal.
